A friend of mine told me that a while back, he went up the business and merchant vendor tree, placed his vendors, and later sold back all his skills in merchant and artisan. He told me that he did not lose his vendors, and that as long as he put in maintenance money, he never lost his vendors.
Is this still true?
Is there a danger of the devs changing this (and people losing the stuff they had in their vendors)?
Thank you for your input.

You never lose vendors, even if you surrender the skills to control the number of vendors you have created, or the number of items you have stocked on them.
What you do lose is the ability to put items up for sale. So at most, you'd only be able to keep your business running for 30 days until everything dropped into your storeroom and you can't restock until you delete some vendors. You can still add maintenance, which isimportant since a recent patch made vendors decay once maintenance ran out.
And in case you're thinking of just using the vendors for storage space, items in the stockroom for a certain period of time (I think it's another 30 days, although it's been changing lately) disappear. Once a vendor is empty of items for sale, it's no longer listed on the planetary map. If a vendor is completely empty with no items for sale and nothing in the stockroom for (I think) 14 days, only then is it deleted automatically.

It's 30 days. But if you end the auction yourself then you get the remaining auction time added to your 30 days so you could put something in your stock room for up to 60 days if you didn't want to sell it.

Thank you very much, this is a very helpful community! I have more questions:
I went up to Business 3, got my one vendor that is huge.
1. how many items will it hold?
2. how many additional items can it hold if I continue up the business tree, and even go to merchant?
3. If I continue up the business tree or the merchant tree, and got other vendors that are smaller machines, or actually people, can I then lose merchant or descend down the business tree back to business 3, and still be able to use those vendors? this is slightly different than the question that I asked above, as in this scenario, I would stop selling back skill boxes at business 3, the box that lets me have one functional vendor.
My goal is to use a vendor for storage, as well as sell things, as well as have a place that people could drop off my auction winnings, etc.
Thanks so much for your help!

1) at Business 3 its 100 at business 4 its 250. When in game do a CTRL-S and look at the boxes in business and then in merchant's managment and effieceny boxes to keep a count. Remember this is a total number not a per vendor number.
2)Business 4 gives you your second vendor, novice merchant your 3rd. From there vendors are added at Management 1-4 and at effeciency 4
3) Lets say you get to business 4 get your vendor to 250 items add a second vendor and go to business 3. It will not let you control EITHER of your vendors until you are back at the number you are allowed to have at your current skill level. When they redid merchant this was one thing they found important to change and its been effective.
If your looking for it as a way to do mass storage and item drop off and want to burn a lot of skill points. Then go to Merchant 0/0/0/4 and you will have 2750 storage and 7 vendors you could drop.
