Thread: Mind. What is it good for?

Greetings all,

I'm at the point where I get my resources through harvesters and do not participate in combat. Except during those "fun" times where I don't pay attention when auto-running and run through some upset critters.

I am thinking of dumping as many mind points as possible and putting them into health so that I don't have to worry about dying as much from my "accidental" meetings with upset critters.

Are there any issues with this? I have yet to come up with a purpose for mind besides surveying (which I pretty much don't do anymore except when moving harvesters) and combat moves (which I try not to use either since I try to avoid combat). The manual seems to imply mind should be important when doing things, like say crafting, but I haven't really seen this to be true.

Thanks for any info and opinions.

I believe it is good for surveying, but you dont need much because you dont survey for extended periods of time. I just have a decent regen and low other stuff. So my suggestion is keep one of those stats high and the other 2 low.

If you ever play a rifleman or medic you'll learn the value of mind. To be honest those secondary stats are the most important. When using mind, focus will make you use less mind. Will power will make the mind you do use recover faster. If you aren't using mind, but worried about being hit by a mob, then maxing out will power is best while setting focus all the way down. This way you recover quicker when hit or even use mind while not wasting points on lowering special costs. This would be true for all your stats, not just mind.

One other thing to note is that if you have one stat that is obviously lower than the others, you run the risk of having that stat targeted.

If you're only worried about random monster/thug encounters, this shouldn't be a problem for you, as they're not bright enough (yet!) to examine your statpool and use the most effective weapons against you.If on the other hand you wind up fighting other player characters, you'll quickly find that your Mind points are targeted (especially by Riflemen) and you can be incapacitated very quickly. For PvP-specific play you may be better off leaving all three main stats approximately equal.

But yes -- after having five Maulers spawn on top of me while I'm just trying to visit a harvester, I'm shifting points out of Mind and into Health and Action, too. Grrrrr. (What the heck is a "Cho Sun" attack, and how is it good for takingnearly 500 Health off me at one go?!)

I take full responsibility for running too quickly through the woods to let my radaralert me tospawning mobs in front of me; if I can't burstrun to safety, it's no one's fault but mine. But having said that,am I really alone in thinking the "realism" of sudden deadly encounters (when red dot, "instant death"mobsspawn right on top of you) isn't really all that much fun?

Ah -- thanks, Koukennin.

Now I'm even more sure that Fencer is the combat skill I want to try next.

Yes, having red mobs spawn on top of ya annoys the heck out of me too. But the recent "feature" that really has me annoyed is - burstrun to get away, then being "warped" back into their arms when burstrun is exhausted and you are now "too tired" to burstrun. This happened 3 times to me in the past week.

Fun fun fun

Buugli, something I think I'm starting to notice is that you can't completely freak out and just go burstrunning blindly away in any direction.

Something that's saved my bacon recently has been to make better use of terrain when I'm burstrunning. In particular, there are two tricks that seem to help a lot:

Run down slopes -- especially effective if you've improved your Terrain (scouting) skills

run through gulleys -- if they can't see you (and you're spamming"Peace"), they'll give up

Basically, when you're in the badlands you need to be aware of your surroundings, and always know which wayyou'll run if in the next moment you get lit up by Bad Guys. This "tactical planning" abilityis actuallysomethingthat pro athletes and some soldiers seem to have and use instinctively.

The rest of us have to learn it the hard way.

Good luck!
