Just got the game, and been reading the forums here to kinda guide my career. I just have a few questions I need some clarification on.

1. Do you get XP just for crafting an item, or only when someone buys/uses it after I've put it on the bazaar?

2. What are some of the more XP-Generous items to craft? (novice artisan, with no skills attained.)

3. Where do new players go for groups? Seems like everyone in the cities is AFK, and noone uses the "/lfg" switch.(I'm on Bloodfin.)

4. Can I use a harvester straight away, or do I need to invest in certain artisan skills?

5. Are there any particular places/monsters to harvest/kill for better resources, or is "leathery hide" just as good as "wooly hide"? (ie: Will it affect the quality of the goods I've crafted?)

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Welcome to the wacky world of crafting.

1. You get xp for crafting an item, and also (in theory) when someone uses that item. Usage xp (uxp) is spotty at best, it seems to only work when you're in the same general area as the person using your item. The numbers I've seen for food seems to indicate getting 50% of the xp you get crafting the item. For limited use items (like food, spiceand stimpacks) the uxp is earned when the last dose of a stack is used. For long lasting items (weapons, armor, clothing) I have no idea how uxp is supposed to work.

2. Xp earned is related to the number of resources in an item (not counting any components), so look for whatever uses up the most. At Novice, this is survey and crafting tools (although there's a "feature" of crafting tools that makes them difficult to grind). The best items in the artisan profession for grinding are resource harvesters, first obtained at Engineering III (wind, mineral, and....flora I think). These give about 400 general crafting xp.

3. Grouping is rough, especially for new players. Most of the veterens are taking missions that would honestly kill you dead in seconds, and spend most of their time on the adventure planets (Dathomir, Yavin, Dantooine). One place that might work to find a group is a cantina, since combat characters need to stop in there once in a while to heal up Battle Fatigue and mind wounds. You also might try hanging out by mission terminals, maybe start up a conversation with someone wearing a "Helper" tag (although these aren't always that helpful).

4. Harvesters can be placed by anyone, even if they don't have any Artisan skills. Having Novice Artisan is handy, because that's when you learn how to survey for resources.

5. Different items may require a specific resource type (Leathery Hide, instead of just "Hide"). Otherwise, the numbers for the stats are more important than what kind it is. Check the item you're making, on the right side of the window where you pick resources will be the "experimental cateogories" (the different areas you can tweak during experimentation). These have percentages next to stats, which show how much that stat contributes to the final item. An item that is 75% DR and 25% OQ will have better results with high DR, slightly better results with high OQ, and any other stats won't matter at all.

If you're getting into crafting, go to www.swgcraft.com and bookmark it now. It's a player-updated database of resources currently "spawning" on all the planets and servers. Resources shift occasionally (about every week on average), so wooly hide on Naboo today will be different from wooly hide on Naboo in a couple of weeks.
