As a relative newbie to the artisan prof (going for armorsmith/tailor eventually), adding extra slots by climbing the surveying branch would really be beneficial (ie. had to toast an extractor so i had enough slots to open a second shop). It wouldalsogive us an actual excuse to grind the branch anyway... Most ppl can get by just with surveying1, going 1 km away from your house/store and start surveying. May take a little longer to find a higher deposit percentagebut it's worth not wasting skill pts on the extra 3 levels of the branch..

Extra lots and decreased maint. costs on harvesters. Unless mastering artisan, really no (useful) incentive for going up survey branch. Also maybe the higher you go in skill boxes, access to sample rarer/better OQ resources.

It's WAY faster to survey at 320 meters than it is at 64 meters. I can cover a lot more area with survery IV than I ever could with survey I.

I am in favor of anything that gives me more lots to use for extractors. There would need to be a provision that the extra lots would only be used for extractors and not housing or factories. I doubt this would ever happen though.
