Hey guys,
I am Master DE, Master Merchant, and Master Artisan (soon I will be Artisan 4044), and with the 67 skill points left over I'd like to get some combat skills. Question is, what the most effective template given the lack of SPs. This would be for mostly PVE but i wouldnt mind not being the first one down in a PvP gang fight. =)
Any advice?
thanks,
kz

Well to be honest your best bet is probably TK 0441 or some variation of it. TK has a few things going for it that other combat proffs dont.
Intimidate, Warcry, Center of Being. Even a novice TK if buffed can hunt just about anywhere. Youll have both Knockdown and Dizzy plus Spin Attack. Point for point TK is the most bang for the buck if your limited in points.
Lairs in the way of your harvesters? No problem, Unarmed Hit2 is brilliant for that. You get a bunch of good defenses too.
Ive tried all of the elite combat proffs except Commando, TK works best for the crafter that still wants to be useful in a hunt or even PvP. Course youll never be as powerful as a TKM but still have no problems with critters. Only think youll be missing is Meditate, which is dang handy for diseases and poisons/bleeds. Then again no other profession has meditate and seems to get on just fine.

Agree with TKA. TKA's are more effective at novice than any other elite combat profession. Plus they scale well, so it's dabbler friendly. Get speed capped first (which is possible before you reach master), then pick up the skills that give you additional damage.

0040 TKA is both speed and damage, actually. The state defenses and mitigations of 0440 would be nice, but there's also the possibility of just going with 0040 and spending the rest of the points elsewhere (medic or scout 1000) with the other 18 SP.

Bahh who needs combat?? I can clear lairs, on every planet except dath.. and most on endor and yavin with ZERO combat,, or buffs you just need to know what you are doing.. /smile but if i was to pick a combat class go with pike-man it just totally rocks at low lvls, and novice medic.. you wont need to buff everytime you want to do something.

I like Teras Kasi artist too, as it allows you to survive better even without armor, with the melee mitigation and unarmed toughness skills of TKA.
It's more Star Warsie to get Pistoleer, which is my second choice, in my opinion.

Excellent!
My crafter is a second toon to my main (although lately I spend more time making droids than hunting Jedi though) who is a Master BH, Carbs, and Pistoleer so Ive been leveling unarmed thinking to go to TK all along. You guys just confirmed I was going in the right direction.
thanks,

I would recommend pistols, just buy a nice krayt rep blaster and you should be able to keep some of your sps for artisan if you want. Also, pistol attachments are pretty easy to come by if you are really going to get into combat. But, hey! I do fine with my CDEF.

You might wait for the combat revamp/reorganization to hit before making your final choice and grinding something you later need to change. It sounds like most combat professions will see some type of change with the reorganization.
My crafter has no combat skills (Master Chef, Master Artisan, Master Merchant, Novice Tailor, Novice Medic). With good armor on and a buff (buff is even optional) I can handle about any lair for clearing, etc.. I use a non-certified Nym's carbine and I take Citros Snow Cake (accuracy food) so that I can hit things at least 50% of the time! I can do up over 600 pts of damage and even at close range when things get up on me I can take them out with the Nyms. I also carry a non-certified Republic Blaster I can switch too if needed. Both these weapons don't require having any combat skills to use (and you don't get the "You lack the required skills to use this weapon" message). This makes me fairly effective at combat (at least in PvE) and does not use ANY points up.
Good luck.

I'd have to go with either TK or Fencer, each is really defense based which is what you're going for and has some decent damage output. Pistoleer is nice, but you need two trees to have decent damage, and you'll still have low accuracy and no Dodge.
For TK, I'd recommend x44x as you get Toughness and Mitigations in Balance and Speed/Damage in Power. Precision Striking is nice, but requires Combat xp and Mitigations/Toughness are a little better then Melee/Ranged D.
In Fencer, I'd also recommend x44x, with 44xx a close second. Footwork and Tech give you a good Dodge (+90) along with Mitigations and Speed. 44xx is nice beacuse of the Melee/Ranged D and Toughness, but again, the Mitigations and Dodge from x44x win out. Lastly, Fencer does give you Stun damage in case of those fun Mokk Rockshapers
.
Either is a good choice for getting two trees so pick whichever you think looks better, heh.

here is something different, i never have done rifles, so this was my chance....
me = master SW - master artisan - master merchant & rifleman 2/0/0/1
if you can free up a bit of credits i would suggest this. i don't have any medical skills and it works great for me.
get some rifle speed tapes (if possible)
use the speed/accuracy (lootable) powerups
use -e11 and t721 rifle...all sliced for speed (krayt damage or speedenhanced)
a couple of tanking droids.
make sure to buff and use foods when not able to (vercupti) as well as brandy & ahrisa
muon gold
...send out your tank and a blast away. i can kill most stuffwithin a couple shots on the starter planets..assuming my tank holds up. I can even go down to the DWB and provide (little) support while staying alive with my team.
my opinion..pistols is the best route to go.
TKA, is not a good solution as you won't be able tofight multiple mobs w/low level TKA.

If you want to use guns and you are really tight on skill points, novice carbineer is hard to beat. You get access to Full Auto Single 2, which is great for NPC whackin and meat harvesting when buffed. Even when unbuffed, I have no problem clearing out a few lairs with a laser carbine. Use of a speed / min damage powerup helps too, since you wont be speed capped at novice.
You may also want to get a probot to tank for you. Diseased bocatts (and the like) are fairly weak, but getting poisioned or diseased while clearing out a few bothersome creatures is a pain.
I like guns, guns are good.
