does it matter what you survey for or is it all the same xp?

You can survey for anything. But you actually don't get any experience from just surveying, you get the experience only by successfully sampling. So in that sense, it helps to sample higher concentration spots (of any resource) to help increase the chances of a successful sample. Oh yes, and don't sample for radioactives, youwill bewounded that way.
