This is something that I don't really understand why MMORPG companies do this.. Let me explain
I am anarchy online veteran, I have been playing AO for over 2 years, and I couldn't wait for SWG to come out so I could cancel my AO account. Why? Because Funcom (the makers of AO) actually managed to make their game "not fun" hence they got the name "Not-So-Funcom" or "Un-Funcom" The game turned from a fun action packed game, to a game that actually felt like work. Creating these downtimes.. or for AO uber mob camping.. or spawn times on uber mobs that were once every 18 hours with a 10% chance of the mob dropping the item etc.. Things like this just really turned me off.. and many other of my guild mates etc.. we all joyfully moved to SWG because it seemed like a fresh new start, great ideas, and something that accommodated the casual game as well as the power gamers.
I realize that the game is overpopulated with artisans, but artificial downtime??? How is this fun? Missions in this game are already boring enough.. run for 45 min ... and deliver.. and now sampling takes 30 seconds? Well.. either I had better go re-activate my AO account, or get a TV next to my comptuer so I can do something other than sit and wait while my character mines for resources.
SOE, please don't take the easy way out like Funcom did, instead making band-aid fixes, be creative. A simple solution to the current situation would be for you to make resources more sporadic, different quantities of various resources on different planets .. while this adds in another money sink (traveling) it also would force us artisans to travel a bit more to collect our resources.. and therefore charge more money for the items we make. I'll be the first to admit that I gave some things away.. because, I knew I could mine more resources within a 15 second walk. That is the problem.. Make is so that either I have to run for 20 min on the current planet that I'm on to find the resources I need, or that I need to travel to different planets for different resources which means I for one will not be giving away any items anymore, because i will need to recoup my travel expenses .. and my time.
You guys just did a Funcom, I don't want to sound condescending, but you really should re-think what you did. I would hate for this game to become what AO is.. a game that people play just long enough till the next big title comes along.
