Thread: When can you start experimenting?

I've read the descriptions at the public crafting stations. It says that some schematics require use of a public or private static crafting station. At 4-1-0-4 I don't seem to have any schematics that require one of these stations. Therefore, I can't experiment. You DO have to use one of these static stations to experiment, correct?

I'm just at a loss on the whole experimentation thing. For instance, say I wanted to experiment on a Chemical and Food Crafting Tool. Normally, you would use a generic crafting tool to make one of these. However, there is no "experiment" option in any of the screens that pop up during the process.

Do you have to be a Master Artisan to experiment? I'm confused, because I have seen people in the game who are not MA's sitting in front of the static stations for hours, sampling and crafting. Maybe I need to raise Dom Arts and Business higher to access this feature?

Any help would be appreciated!

You need to use a specialized crafting tool and be at a crafting station to experiment. Generics cant experiment.

Thanks for the reply. I must be dense, I guess. I have stood right next to the crafting stations, and brought up my specialized crafting tools, and then went through the build process. I have the station targetted. No matter what item I choose to craft (I'm 4-1-0-4, as I said), I still see no options for "experimenting".

Like I said, I see other people who are not yet Master Artisans spending hours crafting and surveying next to these stations. Maybe I should ask the question: "Is the ability to experiment dependent only on the schematic, or is it level-dependent?".

Well, that should work. You don't have to be targeting the station, though, and your artisan skills don't affect your abilty to get the experimentation window. Neither is it affected by what you are making.

Not to sound condescending, but you are standing next to the right one, correct? You're using your Weapon, Droid and General crafting tool next to the Weapon, Droid and General station, right?

BTW, if you don't like having to stand next to the station, you can have a DE make you a droid with a built-in crafting station. Support your fellow players, and support one of the only wares they have that work well!

Thanks for the reply, JawaJames. I got it figured out. I don't know what I was doing wrong, but when I went back in and tried again, it all worked just fine. Made a couple of +13 crafting tools

If anyone else in the same situation reads this, the one thing that I didn't know that would have helped was that Experimentation is not a check-box in any of the standard crafting screen. If you are using the right crafting tool near the right crafting station, you will get a separate pop-up (after assembly and before creation) with 3 choices:

Experiment...Create Prototype...Create Schematic

So you don't really have to tear your hair out searching all of the screens for the hidden "checkbox" or active icon. And the ability to experiment is not level-dependent. Apparently, if you have the specialized crafting tool and are next to the right station, even a Novice Artisan can do it. Of course, your chances of success go up as you gain levels, since most give you additional bonus points in experimentation.

Thanks to all who helped!
