I've been crafting for a while and I'm trying to figure out whatsome of these optional components do. I've made items with them and without them and, near as I can tell, there's been absolutely no difference in effectiveness or quality of the final product. I'm thinking of doodads like the Control Unit, Micro Sensor Suite, and Droid Storage Compartment. Should I bother taking time and resources to make these things? What do they do, anyhow?

All the master Artisan items (except the birdcage) are used as part of the construction of other items (Elite Artisan professions items) - you'd need to actually ask the guys that build the higher level stuff if it makes any difference (in the case of Droids I'd be tempted to say 'no' because the actual droid chassis doesnt seem to care what you use to make it)

Control units, GP Modules and Memory Modules all are necessary to produce some droids. I'm not in game right now to tell you exactly which ones, but they are not "optional" components. I don't think quality matters at this point, not sure if it ever will...

In the cases where they *are* optional components though -- a Weapon Repair Tool, for example -- do they actually make the tool better? Moreover, if you make a Repair Tool with fantastic resources but use a cruddy control unit, will the quality go down?

Important for Artisans to know. Control units are also required parts of weapons like scatter pistols. They are fitted on like a power-up.

Control Units and Sensor Suites are needed for making high functionality crafting stations by architects.
They all need to be *highly* experimented, including the subcomponents of the Sensor Suites to get the maximum benefit in the final combine of the crafting station.
e.g. 2x 94% effective Control Units, 2x 84% effective Sensor Suites, and 5x 99% Effective Droid Storage Devices when used in a crafting station combine will produce a +19 functionality crafting station *before* experimentation.. without the artisan/droid engie pieces, you can't get higher than +15 func. *fully* experimented!
If you can find an architect who doesn't have Master Artisan, they should pay well for good components

Control units are required for some weaponsmith-level weapons (Lance, Tangle Pistol, SG82 Rifle, Stun Baton) as well.

Minor correction on previous post: Stun Batons require power conditioners, not control units... but they're also Master Artisan items anyway.
