Thread: An idea for allowing distinctive artisans

Currently, taking an artisan skill allows automatically gives you a set of schematics. The result is that all artisans of a certain level can make exactly the same things. I don't find this very interesting and have been thinking of changes that might make playing an artisan even more fun.

What if instead of getting schematics, you got schematic points. Schematic points could be used to buy schematics. Lower level schematics would cost fewer points and higher level schematics would cost more points. Specialized schematic points (armor, clothing, weapons) could to purchase the appropriate schematic types for less.

Schematics could be given up to make way for new schematics. Schematics could be learned from trainers or from other players -- although there should probably be some small cost involved (xp? credits?) so that players don't shuffle them around completely freely.

In Beta, artisans forgot earlier schematics so that low level artisans would have a market. Most players didn't like that so they removed it. This system would give players the choice to give up earlier schematics in order to use newer and bigger schematics. It would also allow lower level artisans to make higher level item, but at the expense of only being able to make that item.

Maybe additional schematic points could be used to increase experimentation on a particular schematic.

Of course the number of available schematics would need to be greatly increased to make this interesting. Some very high level schematics could be added that a master would have to give up nearly all of their other schematics to purchase. The creator of such an item would be rare and most valued.

I imagine a feature like this would take a fair amount of work. Does anyone else think it might be fun?

I like this idea. So it would be the kind of thing where I get a new skill and get access to 5 schematics but have to pick 3 or 4. It would add some diversity to the crafting classes.

I was thinking that more that you would get access to 30 schematics points that could be used to purchace schematics that cost 5-7 points (at least at the lower levels).
