That just means that the resource doesn't belong to a particular subcategory. So an "Unknown Ferrous Metal" can be used in any schematic requiring "Ferrous Metal", "Metal", "Mineral", or "Inorganic", but cannot be used in a slot requiring "Iron" or "Steel" (the main Ferrous Metal types).

Sound's like a newbie question but are there uses for unknown resources?
