Artisan Archive

OK I'm not really a true artisan. I'm a wannabe smuggler who doesn't have a clue about anything artisan/crafting related. can someone (or several someones) give me a reasonable tutorial as to how this stuff works. the instructions in the manual are atrocious in their vaguity. anyway I have been trying to figure out how to survey, what to use to survey for what substance, and then once acquiring the resources - how the heck do I build something? The closest I came was almost acidentally adding a powerup to one of my early pistols... I need somebody to expleain to me in baby steps exactl ywhat needs to be done to advance in this profession...
