Thread: Crafting tool quality

Hey all,

I have seen posts with data proving that this does not matter. I have seen posts saying that it does matter. Has there been anything definitive on this? The person that said it does not matter posted data on the fact that amazing success pieces made with the different crafting tools were of the same quality. The person that said that it does matter said that the quality of the tool only affects the experimentation percentage of success...

Bump...

I realize that my question was confusing. The question is "should I spend the effort to try and make higher quality crafting tools?" Some have said yes and some have said no and the question was never really settled...

trying not to confuse you.

you'd think it should make a difference but from my experiences it doesn't.

Last night I created 4 Structure & Furniture crafting tools. I experimented them all up to at least 80% effectiveness. I then crafted my first Medium House.

I'm really bad at math.. but 5 wall modules at 10 structural modules (plus a few spares)each would tell me 50ish structural modules. With the original tools I had crafted weeks ago, I averaged 1 or 2 failures for every ten structural modules. Last night I made all 5 wall modules, combined them into a house, and only failed on 2 structural modules out of the whole pile.

It might not be enough to convince you, but it sure convinced me

My understanding of it is the higher the experimental effectiveness of a tool the more likely it is for you to get a better experimental result and you are less likely to critically fail. The successes themselves aren't better, but the likelyhood of getting a better result is higher.

I don't have hard data backing me up but it is consistent with what I've observed and fits what Vaschina saw last night.

I can't back this up with numbers, but I am nearly certain that a higher quality tool decreases crit. failures at the very least.

I don't have any proof either, but this is consistent with some other items I've made like fishing poles. Better effectiveness should increase the chances of success, both in experimentation (won't make better items) and in general success.
The best way to test this might be to craft something you aren't good at and look at your failure chance in making two items and see if it goes down.

Well for some hard data:
I have a med/food tool I made with 91% experimentation, and another one I mead with 0% just to test this.

Used them to make the same item with the same materials.
Both when I got a great success the initail item qualities were the same.
Both the failure % was the same amount using 1 point, or all the points at once.
Both yielded the same exact final quality items.

Now there's no way to tell weather one or the other is more successful over time without doing 1000's of combines in each and keeping track of all the results. I'm not willing to do this.

For now it appears as if it doesn't make any difference.

I made a high quality 88% item and a 4% item and did builds. I didn't seem to notice any difference between the two tools.

Seems to me that if there was a quality difference in Crafting Tools, then it should be displayed in the item's info screen. Otherwise, no buyer would ever know what he/she was getting when purchasing a tool.

I've been making weapon powerups. I was using a crafting tool with 56% exp. effectiveness and was busting out powerups with max. efficiency +94%.

I then made +95% crafting tools and using the same materials was able to make powerups with max efficiency of +96%.

So they make a difference, but its very, very marginal.

I've noticed something about crafting tools. I'm made my own before, with not the best materials and got a 80% effectiveness. When you hover the mouse over it it just gives the name. However, a friend of minem human, made me crafting tools, obviousely with better materials as well, and got them up to 94%. When I hover my mouse over those tools they give me the name and then say (94%). So, it may be that only REALLY good tools effect what you're making. I'm going to experiment with this a little more and see if I can learn anything. I will post any finding I descover.

The (94%) is there because your friend added that to the name. I've done the same with tools with a high percentage so I can find them later...
