Thread: Harvesting vs. Sampling
The drawback is that the larger the harvester, the bigger chunk of land is taken up, and the more finicky placement is. You can get two smalls right on top of the highest concentration, for example, but to place one medium you might have to sacrifice a percentage point or two. It's still worth it, though, if you're trying to bring in a lot of material--at that point, the lot limit is the big constraint.
Heh...afk macro sampling? LOL...what a joke.
I pull up about 30K worth of resources with 3 Heavy Harvesters overnight.
I'd rather not waste my time macro-sampling.
Good luck!

Isn't another problem with the harvester is that you have to place it in a pretty flat area, where as sampling could be done practically anywhere?
a small harvestor is usually very easy to place, even way up in the mountains. Even if you can't use your peak efficiency, I've always been able to get close.
Good for you. You can afford heavy harvesters. ![]()
I, on the other hand, cannot. I AFK sample without a macro, by the way, because both my regens are faster than the drain at all times (don't need a buff).
Exactly DeTox. If you are going to seriously craft, hand sampling, no matter what the yield isn't going to cut it. I haven't made it to heavy duty extractors, but even with personal extractors, there is no way I would ever be able to macro sample what I need. Hang with the harvestors. It will take a little time (and at times a bit of frustration)understanding the best way to position and usethem. I've even had them totally disappear on me. In the end, I couldn't do without them.
I macroed when I was Eng 1-3, but after that I had serious resource consumption. I macro once or twice a week, when I need a short supply of something I can't cross cover with my harvestors.
Remember folks to choose your harvestor placement carefully. I try to make sure each of my harvestors can cover at least two things (e.g. copper and gem; steel and nuke; petro and fiberplast). Then I toggle them back and forth. Granted, you may have a smaller overall yield, but this helps A LOT if you are crafting a lot of different types of items.
If you are going for the grind, then power up on those resources.
For most newbie artisan, they can't afford to have a harvester and windpower yet. If they do, they could only buy max 2 harvester and one windpower to get their supply. Thus meaning they could only pick one type of resources per harvester they have. With the small harvester, they won't be able to make enough money to maintain and power them unless they do destory missions at the same time.
The time used to destory missions, they could be crafting other things which allow them to level faster. So doing sampling will allow them to kill two birds with one stone. Allowing them to level their crafting skills at the same time getting the resources they need.
I would understand at higher levels you would do harvesting because you've established the resources supply and have a lot of harvesters around. Thus allow you to pay for them easily and still make a profit.
The freedom of sampling allow you to move around from one location to another and get the various resources w/o the cost of having to destory your harvester and moving them.
I am an eng iii artisan, and i use two min harvestors and one wind gen. I have found that by selling half of my harvest each day at around 5 or 6 cr per unit, I can pay for the maintenance and still have enough material left over to craft. I use hand sampling for chemicals and fiberplast since I can not build that deed until eng iv.
This seems to work quite well for me. I can also take time out to do missions and play fanfar at the local cantina (also music lvl iii), and still be harvesting resources. I am pretty sure that I will not be able to sell half of my crop when I reach droid eng, but for now, it seems to work.
Also, I do not put 1500cr maintenance into my harvestors before moving them when resources shift. I simply destoy it, and build a new one. It takes less than 250 resources, which I have just harvested.
And now for the big question...why is the only fiberplast on Corellia (Intrepid) 64 overall quality (yes, that's less than 100 and not a typo, folks!!!)
Cheers! and May the Force be with you all.
