After filling my house with resources gained from XP'ing I decided totry my hand atArtisan.
Using the general crafting tool I select the schematic and go through the process and I get a completed item. Although it calls everything I make (even subsequent combines of the same item) a "prototype". Is this normal? I get NO xp for making combines.
I even tried surrendering Novice and picking it up again from a trainer. Nada.
I CAN, however, gain surveying xp.
Am I doing something wrong?
thanks for any help/suggestions

A 'prototype' is normal naming convention for a one-time created item. Your other option is a "manufacturing schematic", which is used to make a run of identical items (although requires a factory).
I think the key question is: what are you making?
When crafting an item, you get xp related to the profession from which you learned to make that item. If you're making traps or camps, you won't get any artisan xp. Those items give scout xp (or survival, or whatever they have scouts using this week).
To earn artisan xp, you have to make items learned in Novice artisan (and above, once you start learning those boxes). The best thing to make starting off are survey and crafting tools. Work your way up the Engineering line until you can make harvesters, then churn those out for the rest of your artisan needs. Harvesters give 400+ xp per item, so they're definitely most experience you'll get.

Ah. Gotcha. I was trying to make mesh traps 'cause I have a ton of bone & hide.
I didn't even check to see if they were listed under novice artisan.

Thank you very much!
