I've been playing SWG for about 6 months now. Mostly I played around with the combat classes. Coming from previous games, that's really all I knew. Fighting and grinding.
When I first started this game I really wanted to try a crafting class. But it was way too perplexing for me and I gave up. Recently I decided to try Artisian again.
This time I am absolutely loving it. I must say it is extremely refreshing to log onto the game and not have to worry about killing stuff. The best part is that I've mastered Artisian, and this charaacter has been extremely self sufficent. I still enjoy my combat guy but it is enjoyable to have the option.
The only part I'm disliking is may inability to kill stuff. I ended up dying twice trying to retrieve resources from my harvesters lol.
Anyway my question to you all is what is your favorite artisian elite professions and why? I'm thinkin about going Chef because I like to cook in real life and it seems pretty lucritive to me.

I like DE. It's not a profession most people do for money, they do it b/c they enjoy it. There's a good mix between hand crafting and factory too. I frequently hand craft droids on the spot. It also requires alot of named resources so if you're into gathering stuff that hasn't spawned in awhile this may be for you!
As for your harvesting problem. Get yourself a good Probot to guard you. One with all combat modules can hold off mid level critters so you can high tail it out of there. Or you can get one with all auto repairs and it wont kill the mob but will hold them off longer. If you were on Wanderhome I'd make you one!

Tailor
There's a really wide variety of colors and styles and you don't have to worry about resource quality

I really like being just a Master Artisan. A.S. and W.S. seem like tons of work. Chef as well, never tried DE. Tailor seems interesting.

How long is a piece of string?
Really, it depends on what you enjoy. Try a few out at the lower levels and look through the things you can make. All the elite professions are enjoyable if you are not only motivated by credits. The main thing is to *stick* at something - build a name for being available and reasonable and eventually things will start to move off vendors and whatnot.
Try and think of it from an rp standpoint too. Do you see yourself as a crusty old Droid Engineer or a chatty social chef. Do you want to wallow in resources and do you enjoy having lots of types of resources - try weaponsmith. Do you like changing things all the time and moving all over the place - try architect. I've done them all over the months and enjoyed them all for various reasons
Glad to see you are enjoying it so much.

truthfully, i think it is a matter of personal taste. DE was boring to me. my crafter is a WS and a chef and truthfully the WS thing works for me for some reason. i would be pretty hard pressed to explain why but i think the RP aspect might be part of it.
this was really the only advantage to the holocron system, it made people try different professions they wouldn't have otherwise.
as for your problem with dying easy as a crafter, there's no real getting around that completely but my WS carries a heavy axe and a crate of c12 grenades and grenade powerups. with that, i can handle many things on the basic planets at least and i survive alot better. it is very uncool to admit to dying because crazed durnis spawned on my harvesters .. 3 incaps from bunnies is just embarrassing

My first master was artisan and I still am a master artisan but I'm also a master shipwright which I also like. I've played with master architect, master weaponsmith and master droid engineer (in beta and enjoyed it).
I the only one I disliked is architect but it was fun for the most part just hated making deed items.

Get an R3 with 5 combat modules and 1 stim pack, that will hold stim A's to help you out if you get into trouble, To me auto repair isnt that usefull as its weak and hand stims heal much more. Get a crate of C12's and pixey spice. This will let you take out just about everything on any non adventure planet. though it can take a bit but lots of fun !
As for crafting,, Armorer, weaponsmith, and chef all are resource intensive and to me really not wroth it unless you have been mining and saving for a few months. Tailor and DE are 2 where 90% of what you make qauiltiy of resources doesnt matter.. To me DE rocks but tailor can be fun if youi like hand crafting, making BE clothing and doing cutoms orders and dealing with people : )

It depends also on if you plan on making money at what you do. I'm a master artisan, novice tailor and novice architect. My tailor crafts make me very little money but are the most fun to craft , architects can make a ton of money but they take a lot of time and resources to craft. I also enjoy making Landspeeders for a decent profit and also making the lower level artisan weapons but with experimentation in place. I would suggest trying novice levels of as many elite profs as you can. Don't forget if you want to sell your stuff you might want to consider some merchant skills as well.

My alt is tailor and although the grind is quite tiresome I do actually enjoy it. I love having a vendor and selling BE clothes and normal clothes. I tried shipwright but found that very uninteresting, however I do have a vendor which sells space loot and that does very well indeed.
