Thread: Feature idea: Why would you make a less than a 100 count schematic?

Answer: because it means improved product quality!

That's right... it seems ludicrous that anyone would make a schematic less than the maximum count. So why not give us a reason to do so?

A few people have asked for hand crafted items to be of greater quality than manufactured ones, and this is how it can be done:

If you make a schematic you have a choice: do a run of about 20 items the BEST results, or do a larger run and sacrifice quality.

This sacrifice would be small, but it would reward shorter factory runs. This could also allow the devs to increase the schematic count back up to 1000 (because that would be the maximum quality penalty).

I'm thinking that the penalty would be linear and the max penalty would be 2-5% on the quality scale (that right now maxes at 99.8% I think). This is insignificant for most of us, but a huge hit for the master smiths who will have to take their time if they want items of the best quality.

Item quality comes from experimentation, not how big the factory schematic is and personally I like it that way. If anything allow architects to experiment up factories to add a few extra percents to a schematic built by that factory. An excellent factory would produce a better item, reguardless of its schematic but would generally produce the same item, reguardless of how many it produced.

Then there's no reason to make a smaller schematic and they should disable that option.

This was just an idea to throw at those who think that the individual crafter should have an advantage over the mega-crafters.

Being able to sell smaller schematics is so that you can sell schematics to other people with a limited useful life. Makes more sense if you could make them larger than 100, though. For example: I'll sell you as a medic this schematic for great great stims that you can't make yourself--the price is less than the markup over material costs on stims I sell myself, but you have to fetch the resources yourself.

(This also probably made more sense when Industrialists were in the game.

Currently the only way to "trade" schamatics is by sharing admin on a given factory and extrating a deposited schem.

You can offer schematics to players vendors. Also when you go to sell an item you have the options to click to your datapad and sell items there as well. I am not sure if you can actually sell items on a vendor, but the offering and retrieving them does work.

As to why less than 100, or 1000 as the case currently is, well sometimes you only want or need 25 items, but have enough resources in your factory to make a 100. This is a nice way to limit the factory to only making x number of items. Something I had to do a lot when factories were bugged.

Last time I tried to put a schem in a trade window it was a "no-drop". Is it invisible like PCD's? We tried to accept the trade and nothin show'd up.

I'll try the vendor trick tho

I haven't traded schematics in a while, but I recall vender transfers did work at one point.
