to get up the engineering skills?

Anything that gives general crafting XP, which is basically anything in the artisan tree. There are several posts around that discuss the best/fastest/cheapest route to do this. If you provide a few more details I might be able to help better.

Weapon powerups to Engi III, harvesters for the rest. Since the change that makes harvesters properly give crafting xp went in, they're the best way to get GCXP since you can actually use them, and people will buy them from the bazaar too.
