Thread: factories -- what can you tell me
OK, I am a master artisan that has never used factories... I have a few questions:
1. Do you xp for things you create with a factory?
2. Can you explain the process of using the factory (briefly)? I know you have to create a schematic and input resources, but I really don't know how it all works.
3.What kind of factories are there?
Before I shell out the money for a factory I just want to understand how they work.
Thanks.
Basically, to use a factory. You will use a specific crafting tool at a station for it. IE. using a Weapon Crafting tool at a Weapon Crafting station. You will create an item using your resources. Once you finish putting in the resources and proceed to the next stage you can 1) Experiemtn 2) Create Prototype 3) Create Manufacturing Schematic. Schematics are made and inserted into a factory to make that item. So you would make a schematic for what you would like to mass produce (factories are basically for mass producing), you also insert the resources needed to make each individual item. If someting takes you 2 chemical and 3 gas to make 1, then to make 100 you would need to put in 200 chemical and 300 gas. Schematics can make up to 100 items for each schematic. Once 100 items are made from a schematic, you need a new one.
Also, some things can only be made with the use of a factory. This is when you get into an elite profession and get near the master status.
Currently there are Structure Factories (Structures) Weapon Factory (Weapons) Food Factory (Food, Medicine) Clothing Factory (Clothing, Armor).

Actually, they changed this in the last big patch. Now schematics can be made to create up to 1000 identical items.
Also, you have to use the exact same resources in the factory that you used to create the schematic. So using Cheese's example, if you created the schematic using 2 Tridletump Lubricating oil and 3 Fludgegon Hydron-3 Inert Gas, the factory will only accept Tridletump and Fludgegon. You can't put in 150 Fludgegon and 150 Tweedlefloo Hydron-3 Inert gas and get out the 100 items.
Thanks for the explanation. It all sounds like what I expected.
Basically, the factory types just follow the pattern of the crafting tools and public crafting stations. Makes sense.
So, what is a reasonable price to pay to buy a weapon/general item factory?
One last question:
Do factories require power like a harvestor? Or do they work more like houses?
The standard rate is 1200 credits per day for maintenance, and 50 units of power per hour of operation.
All factories require 1 lot to be placed, with the exception of a Structure Factory, which requires 2 lots.
Items take approximately 8 seconds per unit of complexity to be produced.
Your "access schematic slot" UI has a display maximum of 50 schematics.
Make sure you place the resources in the input hopper in the same order they are listed in the draft schematic (NOT the manufacturing schematic). Your factory may eat resources if you don't.
