I never received a starter item from the trainer, when you created a toon it was born with starter items for that profession.

Now you get some starter items all nov trained and must do a few 'quests' for other items, but that has been recent..think came in with RotW/CU

It's been a while since I've last trained Novice Artisan, but I'm pretty sure I got a starter crafting tool and the basic resource survey devices. Dancers just recently got the added ability to craft props, so I have been recommending that if they can't find a crafting tool, they can try training in Novice Artisan to get one. I just heard from one who said that she didn't get any starter items when she trained. I assume this is a bug, though I haven't tried it myself. Has this happened to anyone else?

I don't think that happens anymore. Now the new characters start with all the requisite items, and all the novice boxes, so I'm guessing that they discontinued the practice of the starter items from trainers.
