Do alot of people just randomly zip around and survey or is there some sort of network /webpage that people use to help them find resources? My alt has alot of misc resources, but after making a heavy crusier, that has diminished quite a bit. Since he's almost all crafting, how do you guys remain "safe" when surveying or should I redistribute some points to some decent combat skills?

Iconic professions. Ok. Chewbacca was a Scout. How come that didn't stay?

When you think about it, aren't almost all of the original professions iconic? You can find something on each of them in the Expanded Universe.

I miss being a Ranger. It was more than a profession, it was a virtual way of life. It wasn't for everyone. But those who took it up became family.

I step outside my house.. check for new stuff, survey.. if necessary hop on my speeder and travel to where it is. Or check on my way to my harvesters.

As for staying safe.. keep the over head map up all the time, and avoid the red

I pretty much stick to the easy planets now. I also picked up a few fighting skills - SOE doesn't seem to want people to just be crafters. Some fighting or devensive abilities are almost a necessity. You should probably pick up a good set of armor too. You'll be hindered by it (attack speed, accuracy, etc.), but it will help keep you alive while checking harvesters.

As for where I survey, I just start on the easy planets (I personally like Tatooine west of Bestine) and go until I find a good concentration of the resource I'm after. Sometimes I have to survey the entire planet and move on to a second planet. I really loathe surveying on days like those.

As for websites, swgcraft.com has a good list of what resources are on what planets for your server, but doesn't keep track of good spawn waypts. I haven't seen a website that does that very well. It's tough enough to keep track of what resources are on the different planets at any given time. And if someone has entered a waypt somewhere, it probably means that they surveyed for that waypt, and probably have several harvesters on it already.

Thus sayeth Dimear

If you have one of those 30k resource kits handy, use it. Just be careful so that you don't create a resource on accident. For a low combat-level character, its about as safe as you could want. Boring, but safe.

I went with Ranger for safety while resource surveying and harvester checks. It looks like you are familiar with this class, so I wont go into much detail except that it works very well. Master Ranger alonegives you CL60 so you can weild lvl 54 weps, wear Battle armor, and use Stim D's also.

For helpful resource hunting sites, I also use SWGcraft.com extensively and am lucky to be on a server with some go-getters doing the updates. Even when I try to help out and input stuff, they always beat me to it.

SWG-iss.com is good also, as it takes info straight from SWGcraft.com and has a great sorting engine based on stats.

Good Luck!

I started out just zipping around, looknig for resource concentrations, but i made sure to pay attention, and find the good flat area's that you can place a bunch of harvesters down on. Now aday's I just tend to hit those flat area's, and can usually find what i'm looking for in a good concentration, with a minimal of effort

Talus is a nice plant to look on too.. not many cities usually, not many mobs, lotsa fairly flat land

You can also buy an Interplanetary Survey Droid from a Droid Engineer. It will not give you waypoints but it will tell you what resources are currently available.

You may want to consider adding some scout skills to your template; I forget the branch but one of them gives you the skill Mask Scent. It doesn't work all the time but I've slipped ny many a dangerous creature using it.
