Ok i am a master artisan and i am still trying to figure out logically how the surveying tools are working. I have found that i can hunt down a hot spot of a certain metal and mark it as a waypooint. I dont have a rig for it yet but want to relocate it for when i do. So the next day i come back to the spot and scan and that meterial is not even there.... has anyone else had this problem?

Also When i use a mineral surveying tool i have looked for and found Codoan Copper (sp) which as many know has a very high OQ. so i drop a rig on this spot and get what i can befor the source depleted. but i want to find a new source so standing on that spot i open the same mineral surveying tool and that mineral is not even LISTED in my tool to search for.... Can someone please explain to me the inner workings of how this part of the game engin is working? At first i thought that the tool only showed me what menerals were native to that planet. So i figured good enough i can deal with that. but when i came across this copper i needed mined 15k of it and it depleted, all of a sudden that ore isnt even in my tool, as if i never knew the stuff exhisted. but i have 15k of the stuff to prove it did and it did on this same planet.

So this brings up another question i hope someone can answer if I have a surveying tool that is degrading because of death (though there is no way to see what its durrability is) Does this tool become less effective (another thing you cant see once the item is created) as it degrades and therfore the higher grade meterials are no longer visiable in the tools list because its notcapable of finding it in its degraded state? if so... Why is this not mentioned anywhere that i can find in the game manual or online game help....

if anyone can help me with insight on this i would appreciate it.

Thank you both for taking time to fill me in on this. It has greatly helped me understand why the tool behaves the way it does. Now this does not mean i agree with it being permanently gone.. seems like that would cause a astronomical amount of named copper over a period of time. I was thinking that Codoan copper would be found elsewhere but that not all codoan would have the same stats. now i see that instead of changing the stats on the copper source... they change the name. and that name always has that stats associated with it...

the one thing though that i still dont like about this is with Wind energy. it clearly stated "renewable energy source" but yet i had a windmill tell me it depleted its source and it dropped from 60% doen to 6%.... I mean... i get the fluctuating ammount of wind... but depleting it...

thanks again for your help in understanding this

I am fairly new to the game and had the same question as you not long ago.

Resources actually shift into a planet, and then out again. They shift fairly frequently, anywhere from about 4 - 14 days. If you find a resource, say an aluminum called Ochen (for example), that resource with those stats will be available for a finite amount of time (4 - 14 days). If you are sitting on an 80% concentration with a harvester, it will stay at that until the resource shifts out. When it shifts out, it is gone forever. So, if your harvester runs dry, that means it is no longer available. It does not mean that you mined out that location and simply have to move it.

Now, when this aluminum, called Ochen, shifts out, you may get a different aluminum, called something else, with different stats, for a period of time. And so on, and so on.

If a resource is available on multiple planets then it will have the same stats on every planet.

The best way I have found to keep up with it all is by using swgcraft.com. It keeps everything up to date. Also, you need to survey frequently yourself, as there is always a slight lag with getting updated resources via the web site.

I hope this answers your question. If not, let me know and I will try to explain it more clearly.

I'll try to make this as quick as possible, as I have to leave for a gig in 10 minutes...

Resources do a thing called "shifting" or "shift" on an AVERAGE of about every week. A resource will come into existance for an unknown amount of time. Then, that resources will PERMANENTLY leave. There will never be that resource again. There might be a similar resource with similar stats, but will have a different name. So, once a resource has shifted out, then you will not be able to harvest that resource ever again.

The survey tools show all available resources at the time that you open it... so if the resource you are looking for has shifted out, it will not show up. So, your Codoan copper will never be available to harvest again-- if you want it, you'll have to buy it from someone that harvested it before it shifted. But there will be other copper that replaces the Codoan-- will have a different name and different stats.

The surveying tool will still work even at 0%.

A good place to check for current resources is swgcraft.com -- they will show when the resource was first reported, it's stats and other useful info.

Hope this helps.

wind energy (and solar energy) are treated as named resources just like minerals, chemicals and so on.

if the spot the wind generator was on dropped from 60% to 6% thats because the wind energy that was there is now gone (shifted out) and a new one is available (shifted in) what would be best for you now is to redeed the wind generator and find a good spot with the new wind energy.
