Thread: Why can't I use most fuels for fuel?

So far I've tried every resource that's labeled a "Fuel" (on the bazaar) or described as "energetic" in it's description as a fuel source for my harvesters.

The only two that work are wind power and radioactive elements. Petro fuels don't work, reactive gasses don't work, etc.

I've read here they are supposed to work, but I don't know if they are really supposed to. Is this a bug, or am I out of luck trying to run my harvester on petrol?

You're out of luck.

When the resources changed on each planet, I couldn't find any radioactives on the one I was on anymore, so I tried digging up other "fuel" resources. None of them work. Just have to use wind generators from now on I guess....

Well, until I can make a solar plant and then eventually a nuclear reactor. Has anyone used these yet? Do they both still just generate a bunch of juice that I have to manually walk over to my extractors? Seems silly to be carrying some radioactive fuel by hand

I thought that too. Guess it's just beta emitters, and aren't that dangerous...

To be honest, I don't know how solar or nuclear plants work. Haven't built or seen either one.

That's why radioactives have special containers to keep us safe.

Does anyone know if the devs have ever mentioned this?

The thing that kills me is that with all this advanced technology nobody has figured out how to bury and electic cable underground from a reactor to a harvestor/factory?

Handwalking power is a pain and NOT realistic. When you build a power source you should be able to pick what it powers or like in RTS games just have a "power pool" generated by all your power sources and as long as your power consumers' (factories/harvestors/whatever) requirements are less than the output. IF they exceed requirement you could either establish a priority (game wide or personally customized) for which facilities went down first - OR_ suffer rolling blackouts, OR suffer brown outs where the effiencies/output of all your facilities was reduced by the percentage of power shortage, i.e. if you only are generating 90% of your power requirements then all of your structures only function at 90% of capacity. THIS last option would be the most realistic and prevent high level artisans from having to spend all there time running energy.

Also, Seems like I've got direct debit for my home mortgage, why can't we have direct debit for maintence fees on harvestors and such. As long as the money is in the bank they get paid. You should however be allowed to turn this off, just in case. It should only be an option..

Darn, I'm just full of good ideas tonight! How do I get this to the devs?

Indeed, I agree with those points. But again, I'm really just trying to figure out if we're eventually going to ba able to use all these things that are obviously labeled as "Fuel" to power stuff.

And while we're on it, whet the hell is wind power anyway? Is it a big battery that's getting charged up? If so, why can't I stack different kinds?

I think the devs were just not interested in realism as much as have a very generic harvesting/resource/power system where every source of power is identical except whta kind of machine you get it from.

Has anyone got a solar or nuclear power plant up and running? I'm very interested in these also... wondering if they work out to less credits per power resource or more.

This annoyed me as well. I mined up a bunch of the petro chem fuel thinking that because it was labeled "Energy" that it actually would be.

Anyone know the official word on this? Is this a different type of energy that's needed for different things (vehicles?) or is it just borked?

Perhaps it requires a refinery as a fossil fuel would require on earth.

Elsewhere on the bazaar someone posted that you actually *could* use all the fuels in harvesters. I assume they were in beta, so maybe it worked then and they nerfed it? Maybe they wanted to make energy more scarce. I never ran a harvester in beta, so I wouldn't know.

I'm waiting for a giant bug-zapper style harvester that can get me bones and hide from all those aggro spawns that seem to like my mineral harvesters
