To experiment while making muzzles you need to use a Weapon, Droid, and General ItemCrafting Tool instead of a Generic Crafting Tool. You also must stand in front of a Weapon, Droid, and General Item Crafting Station in one of the towns. Most towns have public ones available.

Desslok Soluth, Master Pistoleer, Novice Swordsman, and little of this and that.
First Holo - Master Pistoleer (how nice - I was working on it anyway)
Second Holo - Master Swordsman (and enjoying it a lot)
Coronet, Corellia

I couldn't wait to make anything useful any longer, so I started making the bone armor pieces available. Sadly enough, with the meager experimentation you have at EngII, it'll still be better than 3/4 of the crap on the market if you actually take the time to experiment.

Other than that, just grind some muzzles out. Also, if you're planning on selling any of the Artisan goods seriously, make sure you pick up DomArts for the experimentation points.

I would recommend just getting a ton of metal and fiberplast. Then just make tons of clothing crafting tools. 75 xp each. I was able to grind myself to armorsmith and tailor doing these. If you can get an equipment factory, you can just load them up into the factory and let that one do the work for you

Point is that if you don't have scouting, the default item in the list on a weapon/droid/general item crafting tool is a clothing crafting tool so you can just stick 4 in your toolbar and just hit return through all the windows without having to double click on the item in the choice list.

If you do have scouting, tents will be the default item.

I would say Muzzles... Cheap resource-wisee, and good xp. Be sure to experiment while making them as it also ups the complexity which gives more xp.
