I just bought a fusion generator and have no idea which survey tool I need to use. I looked at all the descrpitions and noen of them seem to make sence here. Also does it matter what planet i put it on? Ive seen alot on dat but none anywhere else..

That threw me at first too. Use your plain ol' mineral survey tool and survey for radioactive minerals. An ion-fusion generator is really just a specialty heavy mineral haverster that only collects radioactive minerals. Because of it's higher extraction rate, lower overall cost, and no power use. it makes sense to use ion-fusion generators to havest radioactives even when it's not specifically for power.

Great to see there's someone out there who also had my question/problem

Pardon me for being dull, but erm.. so the ion-fusion generators are there to collect radioactive minerals. So how are these radioactive materials converted into power?

I'd find out for myself, but those generators cost too much, I don't want to get one until I'm really sure they're useful..

The radioactive material itself is put into the harvesters power reserve straight from your inventory, no refining necessary. This is a real pain for some crafters, since they need radioactives for their schematics (doctors, chefs, I think some weapons), and the harvester doesn't give you a choice as to what power type you want to use first. And it dumps your radioactive first since it's the "best" power type, typically having higher PE than solar or wind. I lost a couple thousand units of radioactive I was using for drinks (now you know why some have such a kick), because I didn't drop that stack off in my bank before powering my harvesters.
