Thread: Starting an Artisan, what stats do I need?
Hello,
I started a Mon Calamari Artisan today to try this profession out. Normally I start any new profession as a human (the base) unless someone/something says one is better than the other. I swear I read in the race descriptions Mon Calamari make good Artisan's, but I don't see why. The only time I took a hit to my mind pool it was when I surveyed and it was a small hit that regenerated fast. The act of sampling seems to really drag my action pool down fast though.
Before I get to deep in this character I wanted to know if the Mind Pool is really used for anything? If it's not I'd rather move towards a higher Health and Action pool character for some better combat ability. If it matters where I was headed sub-profession wise, I was thinking Droid or Weaponsmith/Armorsmith. Is one sub-profession more demanding on the mind pool than the other?
Thanks for any (helpfull) comments you make, sorry if this has been gone over before. I saw a couple people ask, but nothing that looked like an answer to me.
Actually, to my mind (no pun intended) the more important stat for characters starting up the artisan tree is the action side of things. You need a high action to sample really effectively and a nice set of secondary actionstats to help you both lower the sample cost and regenerate the action pool quicker.

Well, I did some experimenting with a novice artisan to see how A/Q/S and M/F/W seemed to be getting used. The biggest advantage I guess I saw with the Mon Cal. is that when surveying fora bunch of different things without moving; they can go for a long time with out stopping. If you're one of the other races, you'll run out of mind pool quickly if you're just standing still and switching from one mineral to the next trying to find one near you. However, just about any of races (with some minor migration)replenish theirmind pool fast enough that if you survey, then run to the next way point of high concentration before surveying again, you're pool will be mostly replenished. I also found that during Sampling some mind pool is used (40 to 60 depending on yourFocus). If you were looking for a "sweet spot" stats wise, Quickness/Stamina should be at or above 600 so that for each time you sample, you replenish the Action pool before you sample again. Focus/Willpower can also be set to 600, but I think 550 to 575 would also work to replenish your mind pool for each pass of sampling.
This just applies to novice no level Artisan's of course. I didn't spend enough time to level different stats/races, to see what effect higher level's of surveying would have.
So I guess another question I have is.. What do you spend most of your time at? Do you run around surveying, sampling, or something else? If surveying and sampling is only a small part of an Artisan life, I guess it probably doesn't matter too much and we could focus more on our Health pool so nasties don't take us down while we search for better minerals/chermicals/whatever.
Thoughts? Opinions?

Rebalance your stats with migration so that your Quickness and Stamina are 650/650 and you won't have that problem anymore =)
