i have a private general item crafting station in my inventory. i've noticed that i cannot experiment with some items i make, but some i can. i use the same crafting tool for both, and i know the tool is the correct one for experimenting because i've used it a million times at public stations. any ideas?

You answered your own question if you think about it. In order to experiment you need to be adjacent to a public crafting station and be using a specialized crafting device. (i.e. Armor and Clothing crafting tool) I hope this answers your question fully.

AFAIK having it in your inventory does jack. You need to set it down somewhere, I think only in your house.
