Yes, is is infuriating. Let me clarify a bit, though...

I can place an extractor on every single spot of the overhead map. So, the entire area is definitely buildable, and there are other wind generators in the general area. But, the wind generator is always red, no matter what. It just seems strange that I can build anything anywhere on the map, except this one kind of building.

Alright, this is starting to drive me nuts. I cannot place a wind generator anywhere. Is there something I don't know about wind generators that would prevent me from placing one? No matter where I try to put one down, the frame is always red. I can put down a mineral extractor in every spot on the overhead map, but when I try to put a wind generator in the same spot, it is always red. Help!

Wind harvestors are bigger than personal harvestors, even if they don't look it.

This is the source of your headache.

You need to find a FLAT area to place the thing. Seriously, a 5 foot descrepency from the front to the back of the machine will screw you up, it's VERY annoying.

A personal harvestor is 1x1, a wind generator is I think 3x3 (both are one lot, but that's how big they are on the map.) As a result it's very easy to place a personal harvestor, but infuriating to placea generator sometimes.

Again, it's because the wind generator is bigger.

The personal harvestor is smaller.

As a result you have to find 9 flat squares all together instead of 1 flat sqaure.

In fact, I'm not even sure that one square can be anything but flat. The hight problem may arise from differences between squares.

and after you find a nice spot for your first wind gen.you might end up like me.

I found a nice windy spot on a hilltop with room for my generator (close to the edge of the hill)... next day i came to check status and a large gungan camp had spawned right besides my generator.. down in the volley.. and the generator was now hanging halfway in mid air... like it had moved or terrain had reformed

Still works ok and i've heard this is not uncommon but i found it hilarious as a newb 'harvester' to come back to

I also found nice unused spot for my chem.harvesters nearby.. or so i thought... next day i came back and the place was swarming with tough red aggro mobs... still, crawling with maskscent to get close enough is good practice for my scout or i could consider moving ....

They definitely seem to be terrain dependant. I run into the same problem. They also seem difficult to place in areas with a lot of trees. You just have to keep moving around.

As said above, previous placement can hurt you. Others can place their harvestors (and probably do) to decrease the number of connected squares that are available to others.
