I'm an artisan climbing up the engineering tree, and I'm wondering what there is that I can sell before I get to an elite profession. I know bone armor works, but bone and hide are quite expensive, and I don't want to pick up combat skills really. I also know I could probably sell some harvesters and/or power generators, but they don't give general crafting XP. Any tips?

I did it with muzzles, stocks, and bone armor. I do encourage you, however, to pick up a combat class so you can kill the easy stuff from around the cities and take the hides and bone. This actually speeds up the process.
Note - make sure to fully experiment your muzzles. Hope this helps!

I just got done doing what your doing now and here is what I did and it worked pretty well...
Started out with all CDEF Pistols, practiced all of them, except the3.8 speed 21-50+ damage, which I should have just practiced because I only sold one and that took 5 days for 150 credits. Then every night I would macro to survey Aluminum and Inert Petrochemical (that was before the stupid patch). Then I'd take about 600 of each and put them up for 3k each. I would then still have 600-800 of each to use to craft. Easy up to bone leggings. Once you can make bone leggings, I took what money I had from selling the resources to buy bones and hide (the combat didn't work well so I gave it up). But instead of being able to macro you can take the crafting missions and get about 50exp from crafting the peice then on the good missions 800-1.5k for delivering it and in a cpl runs of 2 of those you'll have plenty of money to spend. Bone Leggings all the way to Engineering IV. At IV you should make all chest peices (yes very expensive but great exp). Then go out and make 5k and train your Elite Profession. I'm afraid I didn't make much cash except from macroing, which now you can't do (so now I have to pay for 6 harvesters and 2 generators so I can grind throuhg Novice Armorsmith). But then when you get there, go to the Elite Proffesion boards and you'll know what to do to climb the tree quickly. And also, the wind generators ARE general crafting exp, they give about 200 - 300is exp each.
And that'show I did it and now I get to grind YAHOO
Hope it helps, but that's what I did to climb in 2 days to Novice Armorsmith (each day about 3-4 hours max)
AND DON'T FORGET TO EXPERIMENT FOR EXP BONUS AND PRACTICE FOR ANOTHER BONUS.
