Thread: How do resource shift work? What do the harvesters do?
Ok, I decided to try my hand at crafting. The carfting stuff in itself I can manage, but running all these harvesters is more tasking. Can somebody explain the resource shifts to me?
1) How often do resource shifts happen?
2) Not all resources shift at the same time, right? Is there some kind of pattern?
3) Is there anyway of knowing how long a certain resource is going to be around?
4) The harvester extracting a certain resource of course stops when the resource is gone, but what does the harvester consume after the resource is gone and the harvester is OFF? Maintence credits? Power? Does it do so at the same rate as when the harvester was ON?

Answers:
1) Approximately every 6 to 10 days I believe. Someone else may have a better answer to this one, since I haven't been able to time it myself.
2) Correct. No pattern that I'm aware of.
3) No.
4) The harvester will always consume Maintenance except when it is re-deeded. The harvester only uses Power while it is actively extracting resources.
I hope this helps.
Thanks. This helps a lot.
About the next resource with is going to shift away: Does the order of the resources in the survey tools list mean something? I noticed that the steel I was harvesting (and it's category) wasbelow the copper I was harvesting (and it's category) in the survey tools list, but then the copper was gone in todays shift. Now the Steel is above the the new Copper that appeared today.
Theory (after _very_limited_ observation): Maybe the resources are in the order the appear?
How ever also a new Steel appeared in todays shift and that is now in the steel category above the copper. Even if my theory is right, the category structure limits it.
1) How often do resource shifts happen?
On the Chilastra server, it appears that resource shifts happen about once a week. When I was doing a lot of mining, it seemed to start on Thursday and generally was completely shifted by Monday morning.
2) Not all resources shift at the same time, right? Is there some kind of pattern?
That is correct, resources shift at different rates. Like I said above, I was noticing a pattern of "weekend" shifts.
3) Is there anyway of knowing how long a certain resource is going to be around?
I wouldn't plan on it being around more than 10 days. There are trackers available to help you predict a resource shift. Try http://swg.medievalweapons.net/or http://www.swgcraft.com/.
4) The harvester extracting a certain resource of course stops when the resource is gone, but what does the harvester consume after the resource is gone and the harvester is OFF? Maintence credits? Power? Does it do so at the same rate as when the harvester was ON?
All harvesters consume maintenance credits regardless of whether they are "on" or "off" as long as ithas been placed in the world. The only exception to this is when you redeed a harvester. The only time a harvester consumes power is when it is in the "on" mode.
If there is any pattern to how the resources are listed I haven't noticed.
The order of resources in the survey tool and harvester resource selection windows is significant.
The basic order is newest to oldest going down. So for the survey tool, the category with the newest resources comes first and within that category, the subcategory with the newest resources comes first.
It doesn't work that way for brand-new resources though. Until you can hand-sample them they sort to the bottom. I.e. for sorting purposes they act like they're the oldest rather than the newest.
