Ok , I'm a master and all, but have never done a survey mission. So when I was asked by an npc, I could not figure out how to complete the darn thing. I found a great type of Inert gas and tried to drag a sample on to the npc, and even tried dragging the waypoint onto him.

I aborted it, but it would have been an easy 1200 credits.

How do I finish those?

after youve accepted the mission you have to leg it to the Waypoint and do a survey again. the money transfer is instant.

The NPC is not interested in a sample of the material, they want to know where a large % of the material can be found. You need to use a survey device and find a location that has a concentration of the material equal or larger then the target value. Once you find such a location (that is 1000 meters or more from the NPC) suvery twice at that location and the mission will complete.
