I have read through most info here so please do not flame. I have tried surveying just about everyhting, i have placed harvestors but the only time i seem to get surveying exp is through sampling. Is that the only way? I thought just surveying worked.

Nope. Sampling is the only way to get survey exp.

yes, sampling is the only way to gain survey exp. It should goes by pretty fast if you're also grinding artisan or other professions by mkaing items at same time.
