I've been playing for little over a week and finally found some radio-active ore.I figured I could use it for power when I get a harvester going and tried to mine it.Big mistake. So how do you mine it and what is it used for?Was I right in assumming that it could be used to power a harvester?I have ENG3 and SURV4 and thought I could mine anything.

It can power a harvestor, but as you mentioned it's a bad idea to hand sample unless you're trying to help someone get healing exp. You can either mine it with any mineral extractor, or a fucion generator.
You used to be able to hand sample without damage, but they devided to add some realism to that area.

I'm guessing you ignored the "safety measures" pop-up warning. Basically, trying to keep the game "realistic", SOE made radioactive give you wounds.
If you're really into hand-sampling it, get some doctor buffs for health and action, and a dancer mind buff, then sample to your little heart's content.
If you don't want to do it that way, get a small (Base Extraction Rate 4) mineral harvester and plant it on a high concentration. The harvester will require some power, which you can get from a wind generator (relativly cheap to buy one), or just buy some power off the bazzar.
When you dig up some radioactive with your mineral harvester, dump it back into the harvester as power. Your little harvester should dig you a little more than it eats up.
For a little more info on radioactives, and why everyone wants them for power, check:

Good luck!
