I just set up my first vendor last night. Empty the vendor seemed to have a very low maint cost, but as I added items, the cost maint costs for the vendor went up dramatically! When I had outfit my shop as I had hoped my vendor maint amounted to almost 10,000 a day. I don't do enough business to justify that, so I need to put my inventory on a diet.

What factors affect vendor maint? Is it the selling price? The number of items? Some combo (dollar value of whole inventory)?

I believe it's the selling price. I agree it's really quite abnormal. Something should be done about it. Hopefully Holo is listening in.

Its designed to encourage you to obtain merchant skills if your serious about running a vendor (their maint fees are lower)

At the moment merchant vendor maint is bugged at 1cr so make the most of it until they fix it ;-)

Actually only the NPC-style merchants are bugged at 1cr/hour. So if you have merchant skills, hire an NPC. That's the only real draw to being a merchant besides planetary ads, since everything else is pretty much broken.

But the extremely high costs of droid-stylevendors make them pretty much useless to the non-merchant. It's not an "encouragement to become a merchant" it's a discouragement from even bothering to use a vendor at all.

I agree that regular artisans should be able to have a basic merchant, but the costs shouldn't be so high as to make them unusable.

Note: One way to reduce your inventory costs is to only keep one of each type of item in stock, but also have one of each type on display. That way if you make something that's out of stock, people know they can email to request it. I'd do that, but I make mostly furniture and my small house doesn't have enough space for a showroom.
