Can a container be left in a city or do you have to have your own abode? Was wondering if you don't own your own abode if you need to carry everyhting around with you?

If you join a bank you can put up to 100 items in the "Safety Deposit". You can only join a bank on 1 planet. That's the only place you can drop something without owning or being an admin of a building.

Or you can get a droid with a storage compartment. I personally leave stuff like deeds in the bank, clothes and stuff like that in my house, and all the resources I own (except for duplicate 100K stacks) in my inventory so I can crate while waiting on the shuttleport. I have all my tools in a droid with storage and crafting stations, so I don't have to worry about decay on anything except armor and the clothes I'm wearing at the moment.
