I was hastily building some Personal Mineral Extractors last night and noticed that, no matter what resources I used, and even getting some great successes, theonly BER I could pull was 1. Is there something I need to do to improve this? I am at Artisan 4-2-4-4.

I take it you are experimenting?
Go for effectiveness when experimenting, and max it out as much as possible. I'm a Master Artisan, and with medium quality resources, and good experimentation I can get BER 4 out of my harvesters.

I think what you're missing is experimenting.
Use a structure crafting tool near a public or private structure crafting station or a droid with a structure crafting module.
This way you'll be able to experiment on effectiveness and have better BER.
4 being the max I know for personal harvester and 9 for wind power generator.

Few tips:
+ Crafting Tools go up to 15.0 quality (you may have one that is less quality - even in the negative ranges) Get the best quality Droid, and General Crafting Tool you can get your hands on or ask as Master Architect to make you the best
+ Crafting Stations go up to 45.0 quality (again, you may be using one of less quality - or chances are - you're not using one at all). Normally, you will find good ones in Player Cites and Malls.
+ Use your Crafting Tool at a Crafting Station and use the EXPERMENT option.
+ Use high quality resources of HIGH HR, SR and UT (Heat, Shock and tougheness)
Give that a try.

Lots of people have no idea how experiment work when starting crafting prof.
some of them only find out when they have schematics they can't find on their tool.
And honestly, if no one explain it to you, pretty hard to find out.
If you go DE, you'll get used to explain alot of thing alot of time.
Or put manual on your vendor.
Droids are probably the only items in game that require a manual to use anyway.

If you aint Master Architect or closeand dont wanna make mediums or heavys but small ones as you mentioned with artisan skillsDONT do as above post says.
What you need to check is what ql on the materials says under "experiemtal effectiveness" says. I dont remember on personals but on large oens its 25% hr, 25% sr, and 50% ut. I know it wasent quite like that on small ones. then you use a GENERAL crafting tool by a GENERAL crafting station (preferably a private with a + rating, if not then a public rather then a private with - rating as it gives you penalties.) If i'm to make good harvs I need 900+ qls in sr, hr and ut to get max ber.

Thank you all for the responses!
Yes, I was using a structural crafting tool with a - (one I made myself :smileysad
I have been trying to be as self-sufficient as possible but I guess that is not going to work unless I want to be a builder of crappy droids. I mostly just want to builf them for myself but why go through all this effort to make bad ones.

Hum,
I never had any architect skill and it always worked for me with a structure crafting tool and a public structure crafting station.
And if private crafting station have a - or + rating, droid modules don't.
They work like a private crafting station with a rating of 0.
And the rating increase or lower your chance of fail/succes.

Like I found out recently. Use your Weapons, droid and general crafting tool (probably also with a negative mod) near a weapons, droid and crafting station (public or private) and make another Weapons, droid and general crafting tool but this time with experimentation. I managed to get a +10 mod on it with my limited Artisan skills.
Use your new weapons, droid and general tool to make a better Furniture and structures tool at a weapons, droid and general crafting station and you will be good to go.
I only have 6 experimentation points available at the moment (will work to master artisan soon) and only managed to make BER 3 mineral extractors with experimentation. My resources weren't the bext but not bad either. I found making BER 4 chemical extractors easier for some reason and made a few BER 7 wind generators too.
Sorry ... I'm waffling now ...

I think you need to be able to reach 75% experimented in order to reach the 4 BER level, don't bother experimenting any more than this because 4 BER is the highest you will get. If you have any left over experimentation points, experiment on the storage capacity. I am a human master Artisan with 13 exp points (+15 bonus for human, +15 in clothing attachments), I can get BER 4 personal harvesters with a storage capacity nearing 41000.. which is almost as high as some of my older Medium Harvesters.
It's kinda neat, but totally useless to have storage that high, since I have never had a resource last long enough to pull 41000 units with a personal... they usually shift before they max out.

i started this game at launch, i didn't find out about experimentation for a whole week. And was wondering how the heck people were getting more than 27% dmg on their weapons.
