How does experimentation work? At what point in the process can I apply my Human's natural experimentation bonus? Due to the Carbine problems, I just want to "tweak" out a new and improved CDEF for myself. Thanks.

As far as I know, each time you gain a level in Engineering you get a couple more Experimentation points to use. I wasn't aware of the human bonus. by the time you reach Eng IV and you have a "great" or "amazing" success you should be up to 8 points to spend. That's how it worked for me.

I also heard to put a lot into efficiency to reduce the special move cost. My next guess would be damage output but that's just because a lot of people look at min/max damage.

I'm interested to know more details of it myself but I think that summarizes it a bit.
hope it helps some

oh and an interesting tidbit I discovered last night (after someone told me). hehe

To actually get the option to experiment you have to use the specialised wep/droid crafting tool to experiemnt with CDEF pistols.

Made myself a CDEF with 22-51 damage that I am very happy with.

To do it, you have to stand in front of the appropriate crafting station. You also have to have the appropriate specialized crafting tool. (Stim packs require food and chem, forexample.) I take out my Food and Chemical crafting tool, and stand next to the food and chemical public crafting station. You don't actually craft with the stations, so much as next to them.

NOTE - Depending on complexity (higher) you may not be able to craft an item unless you do it at a crafting station.

Okay, craft like normal, but when you go to finish up the item, you'll get a couple of options. Create a Prototype Item (finish normally), Create a manufacturing schematic (make a factory spec for this exact item), or Experiment.

You get a bonus to experimentation points for race (i.e. +10 Human), and for each level of Engineering and Domestic Arts skill you have. (Master too maybe, not sure ATM)

Choose Experiment. The number of points you have availiable to you appears at the left. The stats you can experiment on are in the center. Chance of failure is on the right. Choose ONE of the stats to experiment on. (Multiple stats at the same time seems to fail more often for me) Allocate points up to the maximum allowed and hit run experiment to see the results. Stats on the item may go up or down depending on your results. (usually up though) If you have remaining points, either allocate more to that stat and re-run, or choose another stat to experiment on. Repeat until the item is maxed out, or you have no experimentation points remaining.

Then finish the process (Done Experimenting) and either create a prototype item (craft this item), or create a schematic for use in creating this exact item in a factory. This spec is not hand craftable by you.

To get the best results in crafting and experimentation, look at the stats for the item (i.e. 50% conductivity, 50% Overall Quality) in the datapad. Choose resourceswith high stats in these categories.

hey all,

Thanks for the responses so far. I am still unclear on one thing. When you get a experiment failure it seems to undo all of your good work. Is there a way to "lock in" your success from previous experiments so a failure wont erase all of your success?

Thanks again,

Syd

Thanks Finegold! That's what I couldn't figure out. Woohoo! l'm looking forward to playing tonight provided that the Devs let me sample...

If you mean on that one item, as you experiment,

Nope - no way to lock it in on that item. Just try again with another item.

If you mean keep the good stats for future items,

You have to create a factory manufacturing spec. That spec will produce exactly that item.

How do you do it? When I create items, I see the experimentation value, but I can't seem to change or allocate anything. Are the items automatically experimented on based on those values when it's created, or do I have to do something special?
