Thread: Simple ABCs of factories
There are 4 Factories:
Food / Chemical Factory is for foods and medical supplies.
Equipment Factory is for Weapons, Droids, general Artisan type items.
Wearables Factory is for Armor and Clothing.
Structure Factory is for building components (harvesters, houses, furniture etc.).
They all use basically the same amount of materials and go for around 45k on Radiant (plus or minus).
For the item you want to make in the factory, you stand near a Crafting Station and make a Manufacturing Schematic for the item - set it for 1000 uses. You don't have to run all 1000 at once, you can keep re-using it until a total of 1000 have been made with it.
Place your factory, put in power and maintenance cash.
Use the Options Menu to select a Schematic to use, and open your Input and Output Hoppers. You can also display the ingredients required from here after the Schematic is selected.
Put the exact number of materials needed for the number of items you want to make into the Input Hopper.
Leave the Input and Ouput hoppers open on your screen if you are going to stay close to the Factory, so you can watch the progress and add material if necessary.
Use the Options Menu to Start Manufacturing. After a minute or two, the first item will show up in the output hopper.

Oh, they use 1200 credits / 1200 power per day - but I never leave them up for that long ... once my run is done I pull them up and put my harvesters back up .. :-)

For the two items I will use the most, it appears I will need two different factories. One for medical supplies and one for tools. Seems like it may be more cost effective to just spend 90K (or less)on some crates of both. I knew there would be a point where I could not be self sufficient but hadn't quite realized it would come so early in the game. Thanks for the info.
Good grief, why would you run off crates of tools!? Every newbie Artisan can make 'em themselves, and they don't sell for much ... practically a waste of a good Bazaar slot!
I try to place items worth around 3k on the Bazaar, since you only get 25 slots on it ... if you fill them up with tools selling for 100 credits, your maximum net per day would be 2500.
Nice stacks of experimented Stim B's and Med Pack B's on the other hand sound like good candidates .. :-)

Actually, I was thinking of laser knives (can be made by artisans) and fans for slicing. I had hoped that when I finally reached slicing I, I would be able to spend more time slicing terminals than crafting. Getting resources anda factory lined up now would make that a bit easier.
And you are right on the money about the Stims. I seem to do too many stupid things to afford my Stimpack B habit and sitting in front of crafting machine to make 3 sub components and then combine it into a Critical Failure is getting a little disappointing. And then there is the strength wound pack and the constitution wound pack and the action wound pack and the stamina wound pack... Dr. Kadd and Lyandra are looking more affordable every day.
I am interested in automating some of the tasks I do on a regular basis that take away a bit from other things in the game. Although I like crafting, I found that to truly do a good job crafting with a machine in your inventory, there is always a hunt for the best resources, you must craft near a public station to expiriment, and you must spend large amounts of time in the crafting process. I have several questions:
1. Can any factory be used to mass produce any crafted componet? Meaning, is a chemical and food factory required for stims and a tools factory required for fans and laser knives or can one factory just be fed a schematic and resources?
2. What should I expect to pay for a deed to a factory?
3. Generally, what are the maintenance and power requirements for a factory?
This may turn out to be cost prohibitive but I like to look into it anyway.
