Thread: Podracing...where is it?

I nearly died when I saw the once grand Boonta Eve corse covered in houses...

Any other Artisans think there should be an update to add in some racing? Like, real racing? Not the time-trial garbage that is there now. Imagine it! All us motorheads could finally take our creations from being pieced-together bits of furniture and starship parts and actually compete for who could build the fastest ones! Didn't you want to be Sebulba? Be adored throughout the galaxy for being the fastest being alive?

I did. Just a little proposal for a future update.

It's a testiment to the undying optimism of the human spirit that anyone suggests improvements or new "features" at this point. Really I admire that.

The CU breaks most professions. RotW introduces a wealth of new content in the form of mostly bugged quests. The patch that was supposed to fix a few things also included the new "feature" of multi-passenger vehicles (which have to be speed impaired to have a hope of not crashing everything; read: forget Pod Races). ...but wait! It did crash everything.

I'm not asking for anything new, ever again. I just want them to fix what they've broken. They've slaughtered this thing so badly that now fixing pre-CU bugs is a faded hope. I just want the new bugs fixed. Then send all the developers home. Lock this puppy down and leave it alone. No new features means no new bugs and no new downtime. A better deal all the way 'round.

But wheres the fun in that? I dunno, I'm a product designer by trade, so I enjoy looking to the future. I propose ideas, it's what I do. Not to just dismiss it, but fixing bugs related to content is not my field and not what I care to discuss. In a hypothetical world, all content could be added free of bugs. Wouldn't you want it then? Thats what I want to talk about. Its not fun to say "that wouldn't work, so lets not discuss it." We'd all still be in the stone age if we all thought like that. But I digress.

I want podracing. Online. In the same world as the character I've grown to love, not on a Nintendo, by myself, pointlessly trying to beat my own times. Is that too much to ask?

I agree, but sadly we MUST consider the fact that it just wouldn't work within the current game system. The latency issues would make it impossible to travel over ground at those speeds. If I still rubberband while walking, and have 30fps and perfect ping, we are a long way off I think. This was the same reason the devs gave a while back when people were begging to have spacecraft flyable across ground terrain.

I hope one day we can have podracing and in atmosphere flight, until then we can dream.. or play other games that offer those features.

when they launched JTL they basically fused a separate game onto the SWG ground game.

when they introduced Kashyyyk, they used the idea of "doorways" leading to separate world maps.

they could, in theory, combine the two ideas to make a Pod Racing "mini-game".

you would go to the Pod Racing arena and enter through a "doorway". you'd then load into a separate game interface similar to space.

podscould be treated like ships, where you can customize your pod by swapping out engines, capacitors, turning controls, ect.

they could even borrow from the old Star Wars: Racer game.

in that game you could save up your winnings to fix, and replace various parts which would effect your pod. so why not use the same parts.

either Artisans or Shipwrights (or both) could craft the various parts.

also perhaps there could be a spectator grandstand in the arena. other players could come and watch from the grandstand and maybe even have an option to "watch" the race from the track cameras (they'd focus on the lead racer).

and of course betting on the races would be a BIG business.

it would be a very fun and immersive addition to this game, and yet again something which would make it stand out from all other MMORPGs on the market.

Now THAT is what I've been getting at! With JTL being basically a flight simulator added on, theres no reason they couldn't revamp Ep1 Racer and Racer Revenge to be a mini-game like you described. And hey, then it wouldn't matter if there were houses on the track cause it would be in an alternate dimension!

As for who would craft the items, why not a whole new profession? They added a shipwright for the ships, why not a pod engineer or something?

Other ideas I just had include things like "phantom parts", rare instances that would allow you to purchase a superpart from a junk dealer if you were in the right place at the right time. And more on your camera idea, we could add a cantina type setting with displays that show the race (like TVs in a bar).

I would totally make it my new profession.

yes.. its the whole vehicle lag thing.. Hmmm possible POD racing instanced place could be done.. they already have instanced stuff.. god wookie world was a bad use of instanced. Sorry but i wanted to explore a new planet. The Vette is still the best instanced thing in the game.

What an original and brilliant idea! I only wish that I had thought of it. In all honesty I had never really thought about this (even though I was addicted to that damn podracing game on the N64 or Dreamcast or whatever system it was on). This would be so much fun, and would be a very unique opportunity for SOE to actually give the players differently paced content than what we currently have. Now just tell us who we have to write to in order to get this implemented......

The game already exists... it was called Pod Racer and was released around the time that Episode 1 was released. You can probably get it for $5 on E-bay...

I think you missed the point. As I stated before, I dont want to play a game by myself, pointlessly trying to beat my own times. I want to play it with the character I've grown to love, in the world in which he and his friends reside. And hey. You're right. It exsists. So it should be quite a bit easier to implement it, since the physics are already developed.

Dont be a sourpuss. Us optimists are at work.

I think if they bring in combat vehicles being built on the same principle of ships. I think that would bring pod racing one step closer.

I would love to see that brought into the game. You build your pod, maintain it, and race it till you crash. That would be fun.

And hey, how bout for a bit of added risk...you could die if you crash. That would make it a sport only for the brave, as it was meant to be! (Or the reckless I suppose) lol

yeah i'm afraidyou did miss the point.

we want that pod racing game to be brought into this game world. so that it exsists in the context of our galaxies that we've built up. if it exsists outside of SWG, it's sterile and has no bearing on the world we've built up here.

by your reasoning they should've never launched JTL, because people could just go buy "X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter" and play that if they wanted space flight/combat.
