I'm not a big roleplayer, in fact, i hardly ever do it consciously. But thinking back, when the game first came out, I remember really feeling a lot more "in game" or "in character" when I was wondering around checking out those apartments on bestine. I really wanted one, but i eventually settled on a tat house in the middle of no where. I don't even decorate my house, it's just a work place/storage place now. If I had that aparment in town, it might be a little more interesting to deck my pad and show it off to the public and friends.
Ok, that's all i have...really...

the only problem is that it would increase lag 10 fold if there was all this extra stuff in all the cities. also there is limited space and once some one got it they would NEVER give it up. either that or they would rent it out for hidious prices.
or maybe thats just what i would do. but thats human nature, only the really rich would be able to rent from these jucky sub letters.
i think its a good thing to move things away from ncp cities.
player cities are getting better and better. maybe a more diverse range of player houses would be better. more styles than the current ones.

the windows sound good. especially if they changed with the outside and were not permanant.
one appartment woulnt effect the lag factor but if there was like 100 rooms full of stuff with vender and all it could have an impact, especially on those with more sensitive systems. i lag like hell in anywhere bigger than AH with all graphics turned down, and i have good enough spec.
it would be good if they made the interiors different on each planet like the houses.
as for balconies that would be good but as you say it would require so much re-contsruction it would never happen.

a penthouse with a landing pad for when the space expansion happens would be cool, or maybe just for normal player houses to park you ship on your roof.

The apartment idea is cool.
However, I think that the chain stores would ruin the crafting professions. Individual crafters wouldn't be able to compete and in order to survive would be forced to open a chainstore or work for the business owner crafting items.

This is a good idea, nother possible point that for the rent you pay could be another place that the system takes in more income to help even out the money problem alot of people are upset about.
I would much rather have an apartment that a house somewhere and put my vendor in a strip mall than just hoping someone happens by my shop and decides to go in. Strip malls would attract alot more consumers and they would more often than not check out what everyone in the mall is selling, in theory anyway.

I agree shopping centers would be great, but I'm not sure it would work with the merchant profession. Maybe merchants could "craft" dirrent types of vendors to sell to others and people could use those vendors to sell their goods?
Overall though, I like the idea. I know I usually check out other vendors at a house if I find the quality and selection good on one. A somewhat centeralized shopping center would allow for better competition between vendors. I know, most of the time, I have a hard enough time finding what I want, nevermind the price, I'll just pay and be pissed later when I see it for cheaper. That's not very good for the consumer and what's not good for the consumer isn't good for the economy.
