That's right!

Take it to the artisan forum, where they have vendors that they shouldn't have. This idea should only be implemented, by merchants! Case closed. Hopefully this thread too.

DireBountyHunter, the thread you posted is the one being abandoned due to the attitude of the merchants in the merchant forum and moved here. I posted that one and this one. I even asked the moderator to lock and delete the one in the merchant forum.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. This idea would completely kill the advertising skill tree of merchant, which at level III allows you to make your vendor show up on the planet map. spend the 15 skill points in merchant and you wont have to worry about all that, and getting exp for this skill is way too easy, just put up your vendors and wait for it to roll in. This idea would also negate the need for the hiring skill tree because you will not need have to pick more than the default business III vendor, and you would not need the skill tree that gives you more vendors because with one you could have all of your items up for sell in town. So that leaves one skill tree left in merchant.... not much of a profession.... These are just my 2 cents, but i dont think im the only one that feels this way.

The put your vendor on the map feature is a complete joke. And I'm saying this from real experience as I can already put my vendors on the map. 99% of the people who play dont even open up the vendor tab on the map and those that do wont go all the way over to your shop just to find out what's on it. Anyone who has already spent skill points in the merchant advertising tree will find out one thing. It's a complete waste of time. This idea wont kill anything in the merchant advertising tree cause its already dead. As soon as I start needing skill points for other professions, I'll sacrific those merchant skills in a heartbeat. This wont do any damage to the merchant profession. It's impossible to injure a dead horse.

More thoughts on merchant:

Merchants were suppose to be the retailers of SWG turning thier shops into malls hosting lots of vendors with lots of different items under one roof. And move items from planets where items are in supply to planets where items are in demand. They are suppose to make it convient for buyers to find everything they want under one roof not compete with craftsmen for the right to sell product. But most merchants don't want to be real merchants. They want to be solo shop owners that have a monopoly on items bought and sold. The merchant advertising tree should give them advantage on listing positions of their items vs non-merchant players. But it should absolutely not give them a monopoly on all item listings so they cant sit on their butts, not do any real work, and force all the manufactures and buyers to go through them. Sorry, nobody deserves a free ride. And a true merchant would use a system like this to their advantage. It will quickly point out to them which planets items are being produced on and which planets the items are less available on. It will also let them survey current prices and how much markup they can get when the ship items in bulk between planets and post them were they are in demand. Most fighters don't want to travel 2 or 3 planets to get the best weapons, armor, spices, and etc. Put it all together for them under one roof and they will pay the markup within reason. And alot of craftsmen will give a merchant a discount for buying items in bulk. I suspect that most of the merchants that want to shoot this down are the park their butts and have everything handed to them type of merchant.

Yea, merchants should be the ones to handle this. Besides when transportation comes out, have vendors in homes wont be as bad.....eventually.

Then economy is (as i understand) set up so that crafters sell to merchants who then sell to the general public via setting up shop. SOE (again, as i understand) is trying to create a game where people actually intereact with each other and imo, this is a great way to do it.

I know real life examples rarely apply to what is going on in game, but stores such as Target do not make their own goods, they contract out to manufacturers. If economically feasible these manufacturerswould set up shop and act as their own merchant. However, that is not how things work in the real world, and emulating that in game is what SOE, imo, is striving for.

Let the crafters craft and the merchants sell. Just because you feel a class is dead doesn't really mean it is, its just an opinion. As the other poster mentioned, once player vehciles come to be, traveling to houses with vendors will not be too difficult or time consuming. Could the system use a little bit of an improvement, yes, but is this the correct way to do it... no. The point of having different professions with skill points is so that you cannot be a jack-of-all-trades. This idea would circumvent the need to spend skill points to a profession that has a sole purpose of selling to the public, which would, imo, kill off the class.

I'm sorry you have had a bad experience with the vendor/map system but i get plenty of business, and im sure im not the only one benefitting from it. If you find a vendor that isn't stocked just dont consider shopping there in the future, find someone who runs a good shop and is always stocked and continue to shop there.

I know you will come back with reasons why you think im wrong, but frankly i dont care and will not waste any more time on the subject, as I have expressed my opinion. Lovely thing about opinions, everybody can have one, and none of them are correct.

Enjoy your crusade,

Master Merchant

2 shops and a cantina.

Buys everything in bulk. Nothing but clothing gets delivered to my shops that isn't in a crate. And clothing only for the variety of colors.

I don't need to partner with other merchants because i have enough vendors in my stores to cover and sell everything.

All I'm seeing from you is an Artisan (or disgruntled Merchant who wants to drop his skill points) who wants more free skills handed to him.

I'm outta here...

I am a Weaponsmith and a Merchant and I think this should be a Merchent only skill as well. Replace the current ad 4 with this one that way you only have one tree to go up. It makes no sense to have someone who is not trained in selling or buying to be able to market thier items planet wide. That would be like starbucks and a kid who mows lawns on the weekends using the same ad and marketing agency, it aint happening. I like the thought of being able to reach a wider market the world map skill doesnt really work all that great and it doesnt exactly give an idea of what I sell at my shops. I have shops on tattione and corellia, soon maybe another planet. So this would be very benificial.

Dire, Think you know what you and the rest of the merchants that want to sit on their butts and have the game system force everyone to buy and sell through you can do so you can have a free ride to a master title and easy credits that you don't have to do any work to get. So far, I havent seen a so called pure merchant yet that actually wants to work to make it as a success. They want the game to hand them the success for free. All the success I've ever seen have been artisans first and merchants second. And they actually worked their butts off to be a success. All I see here is a bunch of whining by a crowd want to get ahead on the efforts of others. Have any of you bought 2 or 3 houses, bought product in bulk from crafters, partnered with others to do the same, and set up malls were people can buy just about everything under one roof? Ummm... No, you havent. You hang out here and whine for features so you don't have to do any work. One word for you guys. LAZY...

I'm outta here...

Your right. Everyone has an opinion. You have your point. An idealistic one it is too and is the vision that the DEV's had. But it isnt working out. The big problem is the merchant profession has attracted alot of the lazy crowd that want to get ahead on the efforts of others. Hence, the demand that this be a merchant only system rather than merchants having advantages using it but open to access by all. An aggressive merchant can use it to their advantage even with it being an open system. But aggressive merchants appear to be rather rare birds...

OK..I must say what I see here is a return to all the bad things you find in the EverQuest Economy... There should be a decided difference between the casual seller... Your meathead melee types ..and a true Merchant. Why should a "shot them up" cowboy who spent 18points to get BusinessIII be given the same rights assomeone who spentweeks working his skill to allow him the abilities to offera better purchasing enviroment to his customers.

As for priceing info on a Bazaar Style terminal... lets talk about a complete deflation of the pricing of all crafted items... You lower your price 1k cc and then I lower mine ... some other guy 10000m away see this and lowers his... I see that and Follow suit... You would create a pricing war between Merchants whos customer base may be two totally different groups of people. Once the prices go to Crap...do you want to be running around the Planets looking for the best resources to craft the perfect gun when you know you may not even get back what it cost in travel expense when you sell it... I dont think so... The Bazaar in EQ destroyed the crafting professions there... who wants to spend days working on skills and items that 5 minutes from placing them on the market some loser drops his price and leaves your stuff there to rot.

If you want to add a terminal in town to assist in locating Vendors..then just do that... List vendors...You would be able to select a profession and recieve a listing of vendors on a given planet. You could select the Vendor of choice and recieve a Waypoint to that Vendor...Nothing else. When a Merchant sets up his vendor he would be given an option as to the Type of Vendor Products listed... He could only chose ONE... Yes I know there areCrafters that Sell a varity of items off one Vendor..but with the Higher Merchant skills you would then be able to place additional Vendors with seperate Crafted Items listed. This way the Buyer must still run out to the Merchant to Look thru his Goods... Lets not make it too easy on the Meatheads who run around the Gaxaxy shooting stuff all the time and make them take a break and do some honest work. This would be similar to what you might see as a Kisok add campaigne, People placing Flyers on a pole with the little tearaway pieces on the bottom with Phone numbers and Address..lol.

Oh..one last point... give the merchant a break on travel expense...kind of like Frequent Flyer miles... Lord knows we burn up the Flight times... "Next shuttle will be departing in 9 minutes and 58 seconds" How many time have you seen that ..lol
