there is a simple solution around the crit fail issue. I use a simple macro to complete my crafting process. This one does not allow experimentation, but the only real time i am experimenting is on schematics. BTW I am also a master DE, which takes alot of specific resources and components. All you have to do is start the crafting tool pick the schematic and load the resources. Then hit the hotkey for the completion macro. If by some chance you crit fail all resources go back into yourinventory, and can be used again. Some call this exploiting but if it is fair and implemented for one profession not to lose resources and hard to get loot items then it should be fair to all.

Not true. Furniture failures, for one, we'll lose our materials. And, if you crit fail twice in a row, you lose your materials no matter what - in theory. Thankfully, I've never crit failed twice in a row on a large item, so I can't verify that for certain.
