Another 1 star thread for lack of creative thinking and even understanding the greater problem at hand.

The ability to survey a resource concentration is unique from the ability to mine it.

but it is pretty much the only skill set that even remotely relates to mining(especially since Survey was the prerequisite for Miner)..

2nd in line would be the architect and their ability to actually build the equipment (heheh) :-)

3rd would be the scout and his ability to build a camp for the miners to rest

4th would be the shipwright in his ability to build space craft to transport mined resources

You hit the nail on the head, without even intending to. As you state, no profession has a skill set that is remotely related to harvesting, mining or running harvestors. Hence, everyone gets to run them. The survey line allows Artisans to use a survey tool and hand sample to determine resource quality before planting a harvestor, abilities no other profession has and abilities that give artisans a huge advantage in running harvestors. That's it.

You're right, Slim. Artisans are the only ones who have any skill related to harvesting minerals (Survey I-IV). Though, as SaleusCorwen said, survey was originally the pre-requisite for the removed Miner profession, and I don't believe it (the Survey tree) was meant to be equated as a harvesting "skill tree".

Just because we have a tree line that is relevant to mining (but not mining skill boxes exactly), doesn't mean we should automatically have exclusive rights to mine. TKA's are the only ones who use their fists in a practical manner. Does that mean they're boxers?

Anyways, I don't want to generate any hostility with anyone, I'm just not convinced that the ability to mine resources should be taken away from everyone who is not a crafter, or who doesn't invest in some crafting-related profession.

Andymantium..

i don't think anyone takes anything in a hostile manner.. infact the discussion on the issue has been mostly civil (there have been a couple of bad eggs but there are always going to be)..

i guess the way i look at it is, everyone would still be able to mine.. they would just require a skill point investment. Although at this point i support more of the idea of giving harvester bonuses rather than harvester certifications..

hind site is always 20/20 but at this point in time i really think they made a mistake in taking out the miner profession.. just because a few testers that they "hand" selected said it was boring really missed the mark in the value the profession would have been at this point in time and in the economy itself. But because the system has been like this for the lifespan of the game i really don't see them even taking into consideration moving back to their original design..

but still is fun to discuss it..
