Thread: Why am I as a Miner (Surveyor) not bothered by the latest sampling / harvesting changes?
I think it is important to keep in mind that the server economies are still quite young. We're all struggling to get resources since it's what makes our crafts go, but once things settle a bit, a healthy resource market should develop. I think we're seeing the beginning of it now, but resources are still pretty expensive to purchase via the Bazaar -- perhaps the net result will be that crafted items become more expensive?
I have harvesters as well as purchase resources now and then on the Bazaar. I am not a powergamer, nor do I have a group of people feeding me resources so I can get the skill to build a PA Hall. I think the people that regularly sell resources they gather are among the smartest in the game as they recognize a need for something we all want -- RESOURCES, and they seem to make a pretty good living at it.
Harvesters aren't the evil they are thought to be by many. Yes there are some bugs yet that are causing problems (I personally have two harvesters on top of each other and can't access either), but they will be addressed I am certain. Maintenance and power are a little daunting at first, but once you get them going, it isn't that difficult to maintain upkeep of them. It's kind of like buying a house where you may have to struggle to come up with a down payment, but once you have that, the monthly payments are often less than renting.
you have to remember this is the early land rush day on all the servers. Of course most people are doing it themselves because a) its new so everyone is trying everything, b) people don't know yet how things work , c) people don't have lots of contacts in game unless they came with an existing PA and d) everyone gets 250 skill points so why not have survey4 now, when you start running out of points sell it back.
As chars mature and points tighten, people will slowly drop their 'dabbler' skills and the market for resources will pick up. At the moment it is tiny because most crafters have Eng4 (ie. make your own harvesters ), Survey4 ( get your own stuff ) and because advanced crafting exp takes so long, they have points to burn. Same holds true for everyone. I have all the Novice skills just because I can. As I move up TKA/Fencer/Melee Weaponsmithing which is what I want to end up on this char, I know there will come a point when I have to drop skills that I have now because I can't get to the end point and still have 25pts of Medic skills, 50 pts of Artisan etc. By then I can sell Survey and things back and hopefully just buy the resources I need on the market. By the same token nothing stops a starting crafter taking Marksman and Scout to defend himself till the economy is stable enough not to have to hunt for your own hides and resources either.
The devs needed to reduce the power of sampling, resources already enter the game too fast. This drove costs of everything down , which made a crafters life actually worse. Everyone making Bone Armour and giving it away since there was such an over abundance of it etc.
As it stands now with harvesters, imo the resource rate is still too fast for many resource types which will still lead to oversupply and low prices.
Now, given that steel is no longer on Corellia, I think Interplanetary travel is now becoming a necessity. One person was suggesting an organization that reports mineral/chemical stats for all to see. I have another solution: Use the Bazaar. Select the option to view things available in the entire galaxy and see where certain minerals are selling. since you have to visit that planet to obtain your purchase, you might as well survey it to mine for minerals not available on your home planet. I think this can be fun for us artisans since it changes the scenery for us. Plus we get to make contacts on a planetary basis. This patch has probably done more good than harm for all of us. Especially for those who exploited the maintenance bug( like myself). I actually have to work for my prosperity.
my 2 credits...
Seems most are still missing the point here.
Artisans shouldn't be completely self sufficient and this has been one of the design goals of SWG since day one. If the dev's had actually seen through the original design goals then Artisan would be one profession and if you decided to follow say Chef, Tailor etc you would lose tha bility to make the items in Artisan and would still have had to rely on the miner for resources.
Luckily for you, they changed their plans and now you can make everythig you want from the go.
Why is it so hard then to rely on someone else for resources?
If anything I should be complaining that it's harder to sell resources because everyone is doing their own surveying, **edit** the pure surveyor has been nerfed from day one.
It will setle down, there will be people selling resources at reasonable prices ad Artisans will be able to prosper, just give it time.
"...What is wrong with skipping the survey line in Artisan and just concentrating on the lines specific to your profession and buying resources?..."
Nothing! I would love to do that but no one wants to sell resources for what they're worth. I'm simply not going to 15, 10 or even 5 credits per resource. One simply has to calculate the ammount one can sell a crafted item for and how many resources items take to realize one simply can't afford to pay that much.
Promise me you miners will sell your resources at most 1cre per resource for standard stuff. Obviously more for rare and unique materials and I'll shut down my harvestors tomorrow and buy exclusively from you. Heck, I'll give you admistrative control over the half dozen or so I currently own and you can keep what they harvest as long as I'm provided large amounts of cheap resources.
