It really doesn't make sense though. It does when you consider they want the game to ahve an economy that works just so, but logically? Nope!

I build this machine to extract Steel from the ground. It needs power to run. It needs money to keep from going into disrepair - does it have a gambling problem I didn't know about: if it doesn't pay off Guido he smashes it with a Tusken Raider's stick I guess.

Since I built this machine with my own hands, tools, and know-how, would I not have the expertise to repair it? Do I have to pay myself for my time spent repairing it? Do I not get to keep that money? Is this an Imperial plot?

As I say, I understand why we have to pay for these to work, it simply doesn't logically make sense. Must be the will of the force.

I totally agree…Harvesters are a time eater. I had 4 Harvesters (mineral/chemical) and two Wind Harvesters…no house. At the time I was an Engineer. I found that just like many others here, I was having to consistently make runs every day or two days to pay maintenance, go on as many missions as possible so that I’d have the money to keep up the harvesters and also have money for anything else I wanted to buy. This got old quick. I have to micro manage enough stuff in my life, I don’t need this. I didn’t have time to enjoy the game. I didn’t have a clue that if you switch off the Harvester, it doesn’t just sit there, it deteriorates…and rather quickly. I came back and made a round a couple of days later and BOOM, I had like 8000 or so maintenance on all of them. I had already emptied them a couple of days back. I was not going to pay such an overwhelming amount. So, I’m letting them burn. I could understand a few hundred…maybe 1000, but 8000+. That is very ridiculous. I can’t build stuff fast enough to use all the resources a few harvesters can produce…so I have to carry the resources (I know I could buy resource containers, but generally for one that would hold 500…it cost 3000), a decent harvester would produce 2000 units in a day and a half. If you switch off the harvester, it appears to deteriorate as fast or faster than when it’s running. That’s just not right. It appears that in my position, it may be better to create a wind harvester…run it for several days to get lots of energy. Then create what other harvesters you need, run them to build up about 2000 of what ever mineral/chemical…grab the resources and then let it burn. Then, when you need more…build another harvester.
In my view, the maintenance needs to slow way down…especially if the harvester is switched off. The current set up seem out of balance to me. I’m not enjoying the game because of it…too much work. I may even start a new character…a non-Artisan character.

Don't worry. Harvesters pay for themselves. Put up a wind harvester and three mineral harvesters in places with good concentrations of good resources and you'll be rolling in dough.

I find it very profitable with even the cost of it. After about two weeks of loses, you do make it back in spades. i make about 25K per day approximatly on selling units i mined. Somedays are better than others, but in then end, if you sold your material you mined, for about 0.5 credits per unit, you will break even. That is with the generator and the maintenance and all. If you don't like paying the money and running, then go to the bazaar and buy the stuff there. The are many player like me who will fork out the cash to get it going. It is a business, you don't make profite on day one, you take out a loan, scrimp and save and after time, it pays off.

The only complaint i would have with mining is that when you go get your units, going solo, is that there is a high tendensy for pirates to camp out the mines. Need to hire some goons to help me whip them out.
