Basically, with the exception of a few very usable items Artisan is the "Jack of all Trades". The intention of Artisan is to give the future crafter a chance to try all of the Elite Crafting professions, writ small. However, just like every novice profession (Non-Elite)there is the ability to skill all the way up and have it actually be one of your main professions and not simply act as a gateway proff. Artisan allows the crafter to get a "taste" of the elite profs available.
That being the case a dedicated Artisan can make superior products when related to a noob artisan. The level of understanding and dedication it takes to actually do that is a whole other story.A person can make a very good living as a Master Artisan...if you know what your doing.
So in the case of Bone Armor, yes normal stats are Energy/Elec resist, however a dedicated artisan can add other stats to that by gathering enhancements. (For the guy who said noobs cant get voritor scales)...Remember a Master Artisan is also a business man who can and should make partners with those who can get the scales, failing that Ive never seen the bazaar not have Voritor enhancements on it.
So why is Bone Armor standard Energy/Elec? Well just a guess but Id saybecause the devs wanted artisans to be able to make usefularmor even ifsituational (IE great against NPCs, not so great against melee mobs). But they threw us a bone that allowed the experiancedand/or curious Artisan make it even moreuseful by being able to"enhance" it.
Each Crafting profession has a key product group, this is to create adiverse market. Each has its niche, but the unique characteristic of the Artisan is that he has bits of all of the crafts, this is to fullfil its role as a "teaching profession", to make Artisan viable as a main crafting proff it too has a niche in addition to the teaching products.
Armor for the artisan is really nothing more than a side hobby, myself I probably sell only a couple sets a month. Most of my Artisan derived income comes from Mining, PUs, tools (Hint 33%Max damage Grenade PUs are BIG sellers right now).

I agree that its odd that the first armor in game was energy and not kinectic. But lets rememeber this being Star Wars the devs probaly thought , wrongly, we would be fighting our faction battles before creatures. And in the beginning of game we all wore Bone Armor not knowing it made a different. Then we moved up with the armorsmiths.
Bone armor isnt only noob armor the same as chitin. Some people dont like looking like everyone else so they wear unusual armors. Which is why padded is popular. Mabari comes with kectic out of the box as well and thats craftable at novice armorsmith and is lightweight as well.
There seems to be an odd small group of people who wear bone for its low ham and energy protection. Or people like me who are unbuffed fighters (We do exist) who go for the losts HAM costs possible and bone is in the group.
Plus we dont know yet how its going to fit into things post CURB so its best to learn as much about it now.
