Thread: from the Dev chat on Stratics tonight.
if anyone followed the Dev chat on Stratics tonight, there was a question about what non-combatants should do to safelycheck factories and harvestors out in the wild and dangerous areas.
their answer was to get a good PSG and/or hire a bodyguard or escort. while it might make things less convienient,i do like the idea of hiring bodyguards. it will add instant content in that a new "profession" will be born.
i've played as a crafter and combatant and i know it would bea welcome change to get away from the boringterminal-made destroy lair missions, and earn some credits from more interesting and diverse player-made escort missions.it's definitely more immersive anyway.

Good luck finding people willing to follow you around in the wilderness while you survey for hours on end.
If I were a combat type, even I wouldn't find it fun.
hehe yeah surveying is never fun. i burnt myself out on it. i run the largest power company on Sunrunner and had 13 - 15 employees running generators for me. i would have to find almost 20 goodspots for radioactiveeach week ![]()
i've proposed in the past an idea for the addition of true surveying droids. you'd release them on a planet and they'd go around surveying for one specific resource and after a certain amount of time (12 hours? 24 hours?) it would give you a map showing you the concentrations of that resource in every spot on that planet. or you could set it to bring back only concentrations of a certain % or higher.
these droids wouldn't be cheap to build either.
if they were on the expensive side, and took 12 or 24 hours to get the results that would prevent everyone from using them. but if you thought it would be worth the cost and time you could send one of these droids out.
this CU system making going out in the field even more dangerous to non-combatants is only one more reason they should add a droid of this type.
what would make the most sense would be to add a Miner/Farmer profession and certify the use of this droid higher up in the skill boxes.
Sounds about right.
Dev 1 "Hey let's completely re-write the combat system of this game"
Dev 2 "Sounds like a great idea, wonder if we can screw over all the non-combat players at the same time?"
Dev 1 "yeah why not, we have screwed over everyone else in the game, why should crafters be treated any differently?"

I think the 8 member group limit will keep the impact of solo groups to a minimum.
the size of the groups are almost irrelevant...people will still log on and solo group up immediately and pretty much stay that way the entire time they are online just for the bonuses

I wasnt talking about a new group exploit, but about a way for a low level crafter to survive when random NPC's start shooting at them.
In the Current system (afaik) if a lvl 5 player groups with a lvl 20 player the group level is 20, so both players get a damage reduction from MOB's with a lvl below 20.
I.E.: Crafter Bob surveys for fiberplast on tatooine, random mutant womp rat (lvl 15) aggro's him and tripple incaps him. Now bob looks for a player to group, lets call him hans (lvl 55 Paladin Swordsman). If bob gets aggrod by the same womp rat now he takes much less damage due to the level modifier and can get away alive. The game doesnt care where Hans is, if he is 5m behind him or 2km away in the next cantina healing BF.

It shows an embarrasing lack of thought and understanding of how a major part of the game system works. It would be 1 thing if PSGs were really the answer, but to say to hire someone, is a joke. And unless PSGs now have magical surveyor protector abilities, I'm gonna find it quite difficult to get the Dath fiberplast that is required in every piece of armor going forward.
i really don't think the Devs have any lack of understanding of how the game system works.
and to say hire someone isn't a joke. it makes sense to me. i mean if i was traveling somewhere dangerous, shouldn't it be a good idea to hire protection or assistance?
hell i've done that in the past with my non-combat character. i have a couple of droids to guard me, but when they got beat i had to call in some friends to come keep the aggros off me. i've done this many times in fact.
yes it might make things more difficult. but it will make the game more inter-dependent and interesting than everyone being able to do so many things on their own.

for the day to day activities of surveying and maintaining harvesters, this level of interdependency is simply unrealistic.
no combat person in their right mind is going to give up a large chunk of their gaming time repeatedly to bodyguard...it simply isn't going to happen or its going to cost so much crafters will simply limit themselves to lower end planets where lvl 10 creature pets and the very weak combat droids can be effective.
just getting someone to bodyguard me through the themeparks was difficult and that was a one time thing, how easy will it be to talk anyone into a regular routine of the survey/harvester check thing? not possible
the fact is that solo groups will effectively be the norm...not just for crafters but for everyone simply for the bonuses. for crafters, assuming we even benefit from combat bonuses as pure crafters, it will be an absolute necessity. crafters will not be certed for any type of armor in the CU so we don't even have that to lean on. just psgs. and those are as limiting as a lvl 10 pet is against a nightsister
