when i firststarted swg, theygave me a voucher for a speeder though i didnt knowi had itat the time and i ran back and forth from bestine to eisley doing artisan missions. we were all stupid once. i later found out that i had the thing and i used it. i was thenable to travel around visiting the poi's on tatooine, met a guy who needed an artisans help, made some money to survey for him, and got my first swoop which was cool cause i didnt think i would ever make enough to buy one. i think they were like 15k then on avg.

anyway, im not certain that new players are givenrentals anymore. i started on a new server and the first thing i did was try to make money to get avehicle. the cheapest one i could find was 27k, which i thought was high but what can you do. it wasnt even labeledwith the percent. anyway, i took some missions to make money and of course these missions were over 1km away.its times like that i wish you could take more than 2 missions.i had *fun* running back and forth all over the place just to make enough money to buy a bike.

im not upset that i had to take the time to do that but it is rather tedious. especially when you start, having no great combat skills, the best missions you can get are for about ~1k. and thats for the best because you do not want to walk 1600m to a mission only to be killed.

my question, do you think thatall new characters should be given a bike or vehicle of some type? and no not a rental but one they can use for as long as they keep it repaired. also, do you make any vehicles available to the new crowd? not asking or saying you should give them away but what do you have for a guy that doesnt have much money and no knowledge of the game? i wouldnt fall into that group because i had experience on how to make money fairly easy without resorting to begging but not all enter the game with that same knowledge.

I think the rental was one of their better ideas. It gives you a taste of what a vehicle is like, in this case a speeder not swoop, and it gives you a goal to aspire to. If you use your bike and let it wear out or pull it out 5 times you get no more uses. And im sure a new player would do whatever is necessary to replace it.

Really though the bigger issue here is cost. And the reason it costs so much is the unrealistic materials cost of vehicles. Why something that floats takes more materials then a house is beyond me. I havent quite fiqured out the logic there yet.

The rental vehicles are still being given out; a player can get one by completing the missions given by the helper droid. I think the speeder rental is a great idea, it gives new players a chance to own a speeder before they could ever hope to afford one on their own. At the same time, its limited uses ensures that it doesn't take away business from the master artisans. If they were to start handing out vehicles to every new character it would put a dent into the vehicle sales business because, believe it or not, there are characters out there who have been around for quite some time and still have their original vehicle.

With regard to the question of luxury or necessity, I would definitely say luxury because you don't need one in order to play the game. Indeed, there was a time when no one had vehicles or mounts and yet we managed to get along just fine. It may have taken us a little bit longer to get from point A to point B, but we still got there eventually.

With all of that said, I will often give a new player a free speeder and a little bit of cash to help them on their way. However, it all depends on the player. I believe in giving a helping hand up, not a handout. If a new player comes to me asking for advice on something and they are attentive and polite and ask good questions, then I'll usually offer them a vehicle, if they don't already have one, and tip them about 10k. However, if a new player runs up to me and asks me some inane question and barely waits for my reply before asking me, "Can you give me some money?" That player has just assured himself that he will get nothing but advice from me. Typically, in my experience anyway, the second player has no interest in hearing my advice anyway.

I do sell my X34s cheap - well 9k. But after reading your comments, I might start a line of cheap 'disposable' X34s for new starters, selling them both on the bazaar and in my shop. That would at least keep them mobile after the rental vehicle is used up.

First, I would need to investigate the prices and availabilty of cheap enough resources to make it cost-effective. I would then sell these on a 'minimum' profit basis (hopefully between 2.5k and 5k).

On my server resources are down to 1 - 1.5 CPU. So you could get a 1 cpu X34 on the bazaar

<crotchety old man voice>

Back in the old days (launch), there were no speeders, or even artisan missions. I made my money doing delivery missions for the Empire from Theed to Kadaara and back. They paid like 800 or so each, and after shuttle fees, I'd bank about 3k on a round trip. I remember running 1000's of meters through the wilderness to check on harvies. Ter

I would consider speeders/mounts a luxury, as they are not absolutely needed to do anything in this game. That said, you can find x34's for fairly cheap on most servers, that you would be able to pay for after an hour ortwo doing delivery missions. Or even just doing the noob droid missions, that you can pocket 2k on for each profession. But they are a luxury in the fact that you can get by without them, sure it reduces the time sink by a whole lot,but the gamecan beplayed without them.

Though they are mighty handy, I still consider vehicles a luxury.

'course I'm a geezer who ran all over the place before creature mounts were added.

I still use creature mounts from time to time as well. They are nice.

And here I thought I was the only one...

I still use my mounts a lot as well. People laugh to see a master artisan riding around on a kaadu, but oh well. Even though I sell vehicles I still consider mounts to be infinitely superior to vehicles.

  • Mounts don't decay

  • They come when you call them

  • They're self healing so you never have to repair them

  • If you ever get into a tight spot a mount will gladly give its life to distract your enemies as you burst run away

Now if only my kaadu had a mute button she would be absolutely perfect.

I sell Crates of swoops - 300k for 10 and 750k for 25.

They sell well.

As for a Vehical for the noob.. I say X34 for free. Not a Limited time.

Its a TANK .ITs Slow. and They will want a Faster Vehical soon enough.

When I started I ran everywhere. Hell I ran from bela vistal to vreni Island on day 1. I recall my heart jumping into my throat when I was attacked by a red dot that turned out to be a howling plume rasp.

On day 2 I discovered a shuttle. Of course I had no money, no helper droid those days, and I happened to be on vreni island. So the swim to the mission waypoint (and then run as it was 8000m away). Anyway I soon had enough to use the shuttle system and bot it rocked.

Week 1 ended with someone giving me a creature as a pet, for the pricely sum of 5k, with the promise that one day I could ride it. Took me about a week to figure out that someone actually had to train it to do that!

My mount lasted until the day of the swoop invasion, I had become a master artisan and had barely enough resources to make 2 vehicles. I made myself and x34 and a swoop. I ended up selling the x34 to someone for around 15k. Boy I felt rich!

Anyway, my opinion, vehicles improved the game a lot. I hate getting killed by anything, and the day my poor kaadu could not get me away from a giant carrion spat I got seriously upset. (I had noobishly not figured out the gallop command at that time!)

yup...back in the olden days a friend & I opened a hunting lodge at the Krayt graveyard....and in that lodge we had fully stocked vendors. No vehicles, no mounts, no player cities...just us lugging stock back & forth..often. on foot. The day creature mounts were released we were in heaven. I still go walking...a lot...you miss so much flying by on a vehicle.
