Thread: Proposal: The Surveyor's Vest (Artisan Armor, solution for the Artisan issue?)

You know, I think this is one of the first truly original ideas I've seen in a long time. Very nice job!

I just have a few suggestions:

  • Instead of having the vest's effectiveness increasejust witha character's survey skill, have it increase with their artisan skills in general. Scatter vest bonuses around artisan the way elite professions have armor encumberences scattered all throughout their trees.

  • It should shut itself off automatically if the player initiates combat.

  • Based on your description, it should not work against NPCs.

The effects of thesepointswould be two-fold:

  1. It would give a handy bonus to people who invest the skill points in becoming a master artisan.

  2. It would also prevent novice artisan + survey IV from becoming a favorite choice in a PVE template.

Edited the idea a bit based on your input.

I didnt want master artisan as a requirement for solving a gamebreakingproblem. Thats unfair against thoose who have been a surveyor for a long time and now cant due to lack of armor. (Not saying this to save my own skin since Seara is actually a master artisan). With this in mind I felt that Surveying IV should be sufficent to max out the ability, but naturally with enough safelines to make the solution unattractive by PvE Grinders.

The Vest is meant to be a quick but nice solution to a massive problem, thats why I suggested the use of an already existing ability (Surveying), although I realise that adding a new skill might not be that difficult.

I have been considering stationary sonic emitters though, that works like deeds and pushes away wildlife from an area (such as the Artisans house, or around their factories) but like with everything else it needs some thought so its not abused.

--- Cancelled 24th November 2006
Reason: The lack of multiplayer pve content and Star Wars feel.
For 3 years I have tried to find excuses to stay in game but only the expansions offered me what I subscribed for in the first place: A multiplayer Star Wars pve experience with friends around the globe. I found friends but with almost no addition of pve content they dropped out one by one. Now it's my turn.

"Surveyors Vest"

Description
This is meant as an exiting and more realistic solution to the Artisan Surveyor problem. Fair, and more canon with the Starwars Universe.

The Surveyor's Vest is a stylish vest equipped with an advanced sonic emitter. The Sonic Emitter emits a sonic vibration, unpleasent for most known wildlife of the galaxy. As the wielders skill go up, she is able to tune the vibrations for higher effect against the more fearsome beasts that dwell the wilderness.

Due to its effect upon wildlife (and previous abuse), its only licensed to thoose who can prove they will just use it for scientific research.

Effect
While worn, the wielder will rendered invisible to creatures of less level than their Survey skill. Creatures with less level will not aggro against the Artisan. A high level surveyor may even walk past Krayt Dragons or Rancorsto drop their harvestors.

Design
Surveyor's Vest, Novice Artisan Certificate

Equipped as a Vest
This disallow use together with Chest Plates. (Its created to protect Artisans, not warriors)

Produced by Armorsmiths
The Vest is a shield emitter, and the certificate is given at xx1x Armorsmith.

Color by preferance
The color may be changed at will, like Composite Armor.

Graphical Effect like PSG
When equipped it creates a graphical effect similiar to a Personal Shield Generator.

Limited by Battery or Timer
The Vest should offer more than enough time to find a good source and get a harvestor planted. To protect against abuse (like afk grinding loot)though, the vest needs a limitation. Either it must be recharged with batteries (like droids) or the vest is decharged while worn.

Meant to avoid combat
If an attempt to attack a creature is made while wearing the Vest the battery is zapped and the vest is shut down.

Does not effect NPC's
An Artisan can still be attacked by crooks and bullies while wearing this Vest

I will share this proposal with the devs, very nice work.

The selfish part of me wants to make it a Master Artisan schematic, not an ArmorSmith schematic.

What do you think about that?

The selfish part of me agrees with you.

Seriously though, when you do approach them about it maybe you could preface it with a reminder that artisan is supposed to be a "sample" of all of the elite crafting professions, but the CU took away all of our armor making abilities. So as it currently stands, artisans get to experiment with all of the crafting professions that are based off ofthem with the exception of armorsmith.

well if I remember correctly bone armor could be made by artisans before they hit novice armorsmith. So it would stand to reason that a tier 3-4 artisan might be able to make this armor ( it would also increse the chances of players to make this armor, since it would be made first for themselves then sold to starting players on either the bazzar or in their vendors) If this armor is placed in the game I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the armor might be used as an insentive to join a player city or guild.

Maybean alternative could be a "PSG Shield" type of equipment to wear.

Unless the Orginal Poster stops me, I'm going to carry this forward with the suggestion that it be an Artisan item, not a Armorsmith item.

Armorsmiths will still get it, just from their Artisan line, not from the Armorsmith line.
