Thread: the grind of the grind

Being an artisan, as i have for the past week, is not proving to be a very enjoyable experience. There is precious little of use that you can build and grinding is the most boring way to spend what is ostensibly my leisure time. I really dont want to trash my character so does anyone have anyt suggestions on how to proceed. I have engineering 4 and merchant 2 and dont really care about domestic arts (2) and surveyin (1).

Even grinding is now proving difficult since the sheer amount of necessary resources to build wind generators and whatnor for xp is prohibitive financially. I have harvesters and power generators set up but they seem to break down a lot and dont produce enough.

I want a game not a chore.

if you play an RPG offline....say final fantasy, phantasy star, or even knights of the old republic....do you expect to get everything off the bat?

I started out at a leasurely pace, so i gradually gained my xp as i gain real world experience in the game. My advice. don't grind if you don't like it, just enjoy the expericence of the game. (and yes there is stuff to do, anyone that says there is not, isn't looking hard enough or they're powergaming straight through it.)

Of course I dont expect everything right off the bat, but i do expect some reward and there isnt one. The artisan is frankly useless - moreso for new players who have to compete with existing players and the existing market.

If you enjoy the prospect of having to build 70 wind generaotrs (70 more than i need, than anyone else wants and than i can auction) with no payoff then thats your lookout; this experience is certainly not comparable to the warrior classess who dominate the game.

lol its easily doable in 3 hours, i did the whole combat medic crafting tree in like an hour and a half or so. if u have the right macro and enough crafting tools its easy

If you continue in any artisan profession, you would do well to learn how to make a crafting macro.

I went from novice artisan (0/0/0/0) to novice weaponsmith in just over an hour just for the engineering tree.

With 4 crafting tools going, and the only selections I have to make are the resources, It does go quickly.

Frankly im fed up with the artisan profession. its a lot of work for no reward.

I just dont see the point; although im not particullarly keen to start again. Artisans cant make anything that competes (excpet vehicles at master level). Making money is difficult consequently and this makes the situation all the more problematic because the high-xp gathering items (wind generators) that artisans can build require a ton of cash. To get to any of the novice elite professions from where I am (Engineering 4) I calculate i require 30,000 creds worth of materials to make at least 70 wind generators. What kind of gameplay is this?

As a player I feel in a rut and unable to join in the game to the fullest. Sure i could go on hunts and choose other skills, but that misses the point. Trying to get apprentice xp is getting me nowhere as well for reasons already outlined, and i cant spend all my free time playing a game where i stand outside starports all night.

What to do?

artisan is a cake walk, except for surveying. I did all the crafting in under 3 hrs, once you can make wind generators its easy. I just sat at the bazarr in coronet. They have everything there to make wind generators. But good luck on surveying ...it takes forever.

once you can make wind generators there is nothing left unless you want to get into the elite professions and to do that you will need to make at least 70 wind generators (or equiavlent). that cannot be done in 3 hours, i dont care what anyone says. survey is only useful at level 1, it is a waste of time to spend further time developing it.

however the real problem is getting the apprentice experience to master artisan. there are too many teachers and not enough students and any game that encourages me as a player to stand outside a spaceport such as coronet (with all the lag thanks to the iunnumerable pets that people unleash) for hour after hour yelling at people to let me teach them isnt a game that has much going for it.

they need to ditch the idea of apprenticeships and app points except for maybe jedi types, its utterly stupid. I can craft all the crap in the world but i wont by mastering artisan if there is no one that wants me to teach them.

yes i did it in under 3 hrs...you just have to use like 5 crafting tools and alternate between them

It's all changed so much...

I started playing just a few months ago, and my experience of getting through the artisan tree was so different. I never used a crafting macro, and as far as i remember I never used the practice option (to be honest, I don't think i knew what it did at the time!).

Sure, it took me a while, but by selling everything i crafted on the bazaar (mostly clothes, i think) and running a few harvestors I made it through the tree without any major money problems. I picked up a few other skills so I could shoot things, gather resources from animals, heal myself and generally get a feel for the game. And i thoroughly enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, very few people seem to want to play at this leisurely pace now, and for those who do it doesn't seem to be possible any more. Now, the bazaar seems flooded with low-level items, so selling anything from the artisan tree is becoming more and more difficult. Blame the economy, the holo-grinders, whatever, but at the end of the day all I can do is sympathise with anyone who starts as an artisan now and actual wants to play it rather than grind it.

Surveying goes quick if you do it AFK.

I agree Jason, Surveying is no big deal. Just make yourself a macro, it's probably the easiest macro to make, then run it. IMO surveying is worth doing because of the increaased distance. I can locate resources MUCH faster with the 4th box filled.

And with the 4th box you can get a lot more resources. I can pull about 550 per hour on a good spot. AFK for 16 hours and you have 8800 resources without the cost and hassle of a harvestor.
